Question about Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera

Have 1995 olds cutlas with v6 3100 engine. engine runs great at idle and lots of power when cold. after driving for 150 miles car starts cutting out and loosing power under load. still idling great at that point. pulled plugs all were grey to white color and not fouling. reved motor while idling and would surge at high rpms. is this a vacuum problem or fuel delivery. checked fuel filter and is clear. please point me in the right direction.

    Hi markimc1, I want to help you with your question, but I need more information from you. Can you please add details in the comment box? Recommend you check fuel pressure at the rail to rule out the pump. If pressure is good, check intake gaskets for leaks. I spray ether or carb cleaner on the gaskets while the engine is running.

Could be a fault with the fuel pump. it may be wearing out. check the fuel pressure at delivery. a blocked filter can also do this as its being surged for more fuel not the normal filter this one is on the pump it has larger holes and if you have sludge in the tank this can stop the fuel delivery. . for vacuum leaks spray some carb cleaner around the air lines any change in the engine usually indicates an air leak. also the fuel pressure valve these can all lower or stop fuel pressure.

most likely idle air control sensor or low engine coolant I know sounds funny but IAC uses coolant to regulate idle. Idle air control valve or throttle body positioning sensor.

the 2001 altima is what i have and I had the same problem as you. turned out to be a bad head gasket factory used cheap ones for a few years before they found the problem. one way to test this is to get a can of carborator cleaner and spray it around the area where the head meets the block under the intake problem should be around the 4th cylinder or close to driver side. if the head gasket is bad the rough idle will smooth out while you are spraying the head.

Very common problem is about a dime size hole wearing in the rubber elbow on the PCV valve located on the driver side rear of the intake manifold.

ok i have the same truck my timing was off 3 teeth but mine wouldn't kick out of high idle is y mine was surging but know with timing right no vacuum leaks i cant get it below 1400 but when a vacuum turns on it almost kills my engine any thoughts i know i got a vacuum line mixed up idk were though

My 89 f-150 300,000 miles starts great runs great with good oil pressure never been hot loses power at times and will die when idling. the check engine light comes on immediately when this happens and


check all vacuum hoses for deterioration /hard /loose. Check power brake booster for air leaks with the foot on the brake (idle will drop or stall)

I have a 2008 mercury Milan with nearly 60k miles on it. When I come to a stop the rpm drops by 1000 then recovers quickly. What should I do to fix the problem? Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

sounds like its not accident related, more like a idle air control motor or something of that nature, ive also herd of this happening when the crank sensor is going bad, it warms up and starts missing the signal.

Engine will not idle and run when starting in cold weather


Have a mechanic take a look at your throttle position sensor and engine idle sensor. Make him manually adjust them as opposed to just putting in new ones. It may require that you have to have a higher idle than normal. Your underlying cause is going to be that I am sure you have a lot of miles on your engine.
