I had a similar problem with a 1998 grand cherokee 4.0 had a no start condition changed the crank sensor the car started idled fine no codes till you drive it then it was giving p0430 p0460 misfire cylinder 4 and 6 and ran rough no speed didnt make sense ran good before sensor went bad removed new crank sensor on the bottom it has a round cardboard glued to it so it does not go in all the way and get caught by the flywheel and break its for the air gap . paper says it will shear off when you start the car problem was it wouldnt let the sensor go in far enough for the proper air gap so when i re-installed the sensor the second time i held it in with left hand tightened the bolt with right hand started the car and it idled fine again but when i drove it it was fine and no codes

I have a 97 jeep cherokee that stalls and backfires and it has backfired to the point where it blew open my muffler. It doesn't backfire all the time, just at times...what can it be?

It's not possible to pinpoint, with just online info, what is causing the backfire, but if it blew your muffler open, the engine is definitely dumping raw fuel into the exhaust. Look into what can cause excessive fuel to be dumped into the exhaust and you may find the cause of your problem.

1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Stalls out, engine quits running

since its a 1997 your jeep has EFI, electronic fuel injection. The most probable reason for your troubles would be the injectors or a problem with the computer controling them, not allowing enough gas to be pushed into the cylinder causing stalling or lack of power, also too much gas iin the cylinder can lead to back firing and stalling. This would also explain the reason it takes so long to start back up some times, all the excess gas in the cylinder is flooding the motor and u have to wait till the gas disipates till the engine will turn over.

Car stalls while driving at high speeds

i would start by checking the spark plugs and leads. if that ok i would think there is a problem with the dispack that the spark plug leads fit to, if its cracked or any rust i would replace.

Jeep GCL Backfires Stalls

Aaron, I had the same problem. It is the most expensive part of course the computer. I replaced everything as well till I replaced it. They are remanufactured and have had problems with them as well. I am on my third one now at 200k miles. Oh and by the way it does not show up on the diagnostic check. Good luck

Will suddenly start to backfire and sputter, dying down but not stalling out. If immediately turned off and on it clears up and runs okay again.

it happened to me on my 98 4.0 sport, had to change the cat and both o2 sensor, didn't do it since... good luck....
