Question about 2002 Hyundai Accent

Engine revs 2002 hyundai accent Just replaced the timmimg belt, two bent intake valves on the #3 cyclinder put every thing together the engine is running fine. After a hundred or so miles the engine starts reving up to 2500 rpms then drops to normal, when the car goes from drive to park. No warning lights are on. Cleaned the throtle body, but this did not help. Also this does not happen all the time, intermitten problem and only after the car has been driven for awhile and at operating temp. Chris

I have checked for a vacume leak and an intke leak and have not found one.The intake was not removed when the head was to replace the valves so I'm sure it is not an intake leak. Plus this problem does not occur every time

  • 1ineed May 28, 2008

Checked all electrical conections, checked all vacume lines and ports, throtle cable is working as it should. Car revs in park after I have taken it out of drive.Only when at oerating temp and not every time

  • 1ineed May 28, 2008

This car is an AUTOMATIC it only has the problem from DRIVE TO PARK it has no CLUTCH to slip

  • 1ineed May 28, 2008

    electric fan, WIZ

  • 1ineed May 30, 2008

The problem is not in the transmission. Read the original question.
I Am an ASE certified auto tech.
Only Kishkan had a close answer to the problem. But not the problem either. The problem is electrical related and not one in the drive train.

  • 1ineed May 31, 2008

No the problem still occurs when put into park. All tests that I have done check out fine. There are no dtcs shown. The diagnostic computer show no problems. There are no vacuum leaks,I have used propane to check for vacuum leaks. This problem does not occur all of the time, thats why its so illusive. I only came on to this web site because it popped up under hyundai repair. I was hopping to find someone who has had experience with this type of car and problem. Some times , it is just something simple that is over looked , but still no solution.

This may be due to the fault of the knob that connects the gas cylinder and the engine check that better you consult a mechanic
check the pump and the gas filter

It is not that the clutch is going and it loses grip suddenly, so that the engine goes up?
In any case, if the care is like this you should have it inspected by a mechanic, before you have further damage.

Well automatic transmission has clutch disk the same, and it is even more likely that can cause similar problems, if the engine rpms go up and motor does not gain power, then can be a clutch disk or transmission box problem, particularly if it is automatic gear.
I still strongly suggest going to a mechanic as soon as possible.

    Automatic transmission:

I forgot clutch is big disk at the left.

Moreover, if engines goes up to 2500, but engine does not spin on whell (like is neutral or suddenly high gear), then gear goes from derive to park is almost for sure a problem with transmission. could be just box oil or a faulty gear, but if you do not fix it you risk to compromise the gear box, then it will be real money.
Go to a mechanic at least for a checkup, as, if this is case you have a transmission problem, either with electronics, or with transmission box.

Timing belt snapped

hi from uk the cambelt timing marks for accent 1.3/1.5 petrol are as follows= the cam cog has a hole drilling between the outer toothed and the central securing bolt this hole at TDC number 1 cyl is at top central and lines up with a V cut in the cyl head at rear of cog ? the crank cog at TDC number 1 cyl is a pop mark on both the cog and on thefront face of engine quite noticable ! these line up and are at approx 12 -30 pm when viewed fit new belt from crankcog in anticlockwise ie crank then cam then tensioner HOWEVER! if you are considering just replacing belt and tensioner ? be warned this engine is an interferance engine that is to say if belt fails whilst driving there may/will most probably be damage to the valves (bent) due to contact with pistons so would advise caution and suggest compression test all cyls after fitting new belt and tensioner and before rebuild completely once valves have bent they will not contact pistons again but you will have serious missfire/s and probably back fire up inlet manifold coupled with failing to start if engine is high milage ? consider removal of cyl head and check? de coke and replace damaged or best all valves then engine will have improved performance and more milesin future hope this helps

2001 hyundai accent 1.5 liter SOHC 12v engine. Timing belt tensioner fell apart. Replaced tensioner and belt. No compression in cylinder #2. Is there anything it could be other that bent valves?

With regrets, Not likely, pull the vlave cover and observe the height of the valves, if it is bent it should be not quite as tall as the rest.

Timing belt broken

this is an interference (valves hit the pistons) engine and will cause engine damage if the belt brakes, the best thing to do is put the belt on and see if it starts, I have seen some dodge the bullet on occasion. In most cases u will hear nothing, the engine will just stop running.

DID THE BELT BREAK AND THEN IT WAS CHANGED. If so then you may have bent valve. IF NOT then vehicle may be timed wrong. Here is a diagram of your timing marks, http://www.2carpros.com/car_repair_information/tec_info/2002/hyundai/accent/2002_hyundai_accent_timing_belt_diagram_marks.htm contact if you need more help. no if the timing belt was gone then the thing would crank but it would not start put the key in and see if you are getting power the lights on your dash should come on oil light check engine light for a few seconds if you don't have power check the batt terminals and make sure they are connected or coroded

2002 Hyundai Accent Problem

first thing i need to know is did the timing belt break?
second is are you sure you aligned the timing marks and after the belt tensioner was tight you rechecked to make sure the timing stayed where you had it.
next step would be a compression check to if a valve was bent whenchanging the belt
i have seen this happen and this engine is an interferance engine.
