Should the transmission on a Jeep Grand Cherokee be in 4 wheel hi all the time.

If there is an option to run 2wd, that would be the most fuel conservative option. You shouldnt need 4 wheel drive unless you are driving in snow and or mud, or need extra torque while towing a load. 4 wheel high would be the most common under the given circumstances. 4 wheel low is a lower ranged gear that gives you more power to climb hills or remove your vehicle from "sticky" terrain.

My 2002 jeep grand cherokee will sometimes over heat when climbing big hills. It has been an intermitten problem. A shop replaced the clutch fan, water pump and thermostat. After repaired ran it well over...

you mention big hills, and other wise no problem, you may be taxing the transmission , have a trans cooler installed, it may cure all your problems, and good for the trans, heat is the trans biggest killer

My 1998 jeep grand cherokee 4.0 dont like to climd up hills it goes realy slow

SOUND LIKE TRANSMISSION NEED TRANSMISSION FLUID + FILTER CHANGE.THE FRONT BAND NEEDS ADJUSTING.ALSO CHECK YOUR THROTTLE SHIFT CABLE AT THE THROTTLE BODY ACCELERATOR LEVER MAKE SURE ITS NOT MISROUTED OR LOOSE AND CHECK THROTTLE CABLE ON SIDE TRANSMISSION SEE IF ITS BROKEN OUT THE TRANSMISSION. THAT WILL EFFECT UP SHIFTS OR OVER DRIVE YOU NEED THAT CLIMBING A HILL.

What is the transmission button on the dash of a 1989 cherokee

Button on dash turns off the lockup feature (overdrive) in the torque converter so that when climbing a series of steep inclines the trans does not go in and out of lockup multiple times. Leave it on except for hill climbing.

How do I turn on overdrive?

On the left side of the shifter is an overdrive lock-out button for use with towing/hauling or hill climbing. Depress it and you should be good to go.
