Question about 2005 Toyota Corolla

Open Question

I have a 2005 Toyota Corolla with the fuel gauge not working. Replaced sending unit and instrument cluster and checked wiring. have good ground at sending unit and low voltage as cluster has a electronic module that calculates input and tells gauge what to do. Any help would be greatly appriciated. Thanx in advance. Clay

When you tagged into it did you cut the wire? There is no reason to use an existing wire for a ground. All you needed to do was add a wire to any part of the chassis.Drill a small hole and attach it using a sheet metal screw. In my opinion you shorted the system somehow. remove the jumper and check all your fuses. Add the wire and your troubles will be over.

If you are handy with small hand tools and a Volt/Ohm meter then it would be worth a try to check the problem, older cards the fuel guage is problematic. In the tank in a wire wound resistor connected to the float in the tank, every time you change the fuel lever the wiper rubs the wires and over time it either breaks or gets coated with crud, it requires removing the sensor from the tank and cleaning it. To test however you can follow the wires to the tank and remove the connector, if you have a fuel pump in the tank then you will need to check the wiring diagram for the correct wires and colors. You then measure the resistance across the two wires for the sensor, open circuit means the part will require removel and repair, anything from zero to about 120 means it is probably working, you can also short the wires going back to the gauge and turn on the ignition switch but don't start the car, if it read full then remove the short and it should read empty, the gauge is working. Temp gauge same process just the sensor is under the hood, same process measure resisitance. If you are going to try this yourself I suggest a service manual from your local parts store. If you choose to then take it to a mechanic you already know what to expect. I don't suggest removing a fuel tank alone, it requires jacking up the card and having something to raise and lower the tank. You are working with flamable liquids and you can be seriously injured or killed. Take care folow instructions and you will be fine. Wish it were simpler but this is what a mechanic is going to do as well.

Gas gage not working


Maybe a problem with instrument cluster?
Usually the circuit works off resistance to ground. The sending unit in gas tank provides resistance to ground. The signal wire for fuel gage is a purple wire, if goes to fuel pump wiring connector. With key on, use digital multimeter, check for voltage. If no voltage, either problem with wiring circuit or instrument cluster. W/0 looking at instrument cluster, I don't know if you can replace gage itself w/o replacing instrument cluster?

If voltage on the purple wire, ground it, while a helper watches the gage, if the gage starts reacting, then check the grounds for fuel pump wiring connector, if that checks ok, suspect the fuel pump sending unit has a problem.

Either the gauge itself, or the wire from gauge to tank, or the sending unit in the tank. Most of the time it is a problem with the sending unit.

They work like this: in the instrument cluster, a small voltage regulator sends low voltage through the gauge, into the wire to tank, and to the sending unit. The unit has a variable resistor that varies according to the fuel level, measured by the float arm attached to the unit. What it (the gauge) actually measures is resistance to ground-the current goes to a ground point after going through the variable resistor in the sending unit.

You can check if problem is the gauge or the sending unit by grounding the fuel gauge wire at the gas tank connector. Pull the electrical connector apart and locate the fuel gauge wire. Jumper that wire to ground on the frame while watching the fuel gauge needle for movement. DO NOT ground it for more than a split second, just touch to ground while someone watches the gauge. If the gauge needle moves at all (will probably go to full or empty), then the problem is the sending unit in the tank. The gauge is good, so is the wire from gauge to tank. I should mention that doing this test can possibly blow the meter (gauges) fuse in the fuse panel- why I said to do it just for a brief moment.

Anti slosh module? I've never heard of that. If there is such a thing, it must be on the fuel level sending unit in the tank. It is usually the sending unit at fault when the gas gauge stops working.

Here's how to check if the problem is the sending unit or the gauge in the cluster: you will need a helper to watch the gas gauge needle. Pull the electrical connector apart at the tank, find the gas gauge wire. The power wire for the fuel pump is pink and black, and the ground for it is a black wire, so the fuel sender wire should be a different color. When you figure out which wire is for the gas gauge, turn the key to on, and take a jumper wire and ground the gas gauge wire to the frame. Have a helper watch the gas gauge needle when you ground the wire: the needle should move perceptibly. If it does, the gauge in the cluster is good, and the problem is with the sending unit in the tank. If grounding the wire does not make the needle jump, the problem may be the gauge in the cluster. Be sure that you have made a good contact with ground with the jumper wire.
There is a small match box size voltage regulator on the back of the cluster. This sends low voltage (about 5 volts) through the gas gauge and on to the wire going to the tank. When you ground this wire, it should cause the gauge needle to go either to full or to empty, but you should see the needle move. Remember, key on, then ground the wire. Any movement of the needle means the gas gauge is probably good, and the problem is the sending unit in the tank.

Fuel gauge does not work what needs replaced


Depends on WHY it doesnt work. Instrument clusters are common. Fuel sending units are common. Some instrument clusters are covered under warranty, call the dealer. If the sender is bad, replace the fuel pump module. could be a wiring issue also.

GAS GAUGE DOSENT WORK RIGHT. GOES FROM FULL TO EMPTY...BACK TO 1/2 ETC.....JUMPS ALL OVER...


might need a new fuel level sending unit...... or the gauge cluster is bad... there was a recall years back on the gauges.... the sending unit is not terribly expensive but the gauge cluster...good luck

Fuel Level Indication System The fuel level indication system is a magnetic gauge system. It consists of a magnetic fuel gauge (9280) mounted in the instrument cluster (10849) and a sending unit located in the fuel tank (9002) with an instrument cluster gauge amplifier (10E849) in series between the two. No instrument voltage regulator is used with this system. Fuel Gauge
The magnetic gauge movement consists of three primary coils, one of which is wound at a 90-degree angle to the other two. The coils form a magnetic field which varies in direction according to the variable resistance of the sender unit which is connected between two of them. A primary magnet, to which a shaft and pointer are attached, rotates to align to this primary field, resulting in pointer position. The bobbin/coil assembly is pressed into a metal housing which has two holes for dial mounting. There is no adjustment, calibration or maintenance required for these gauges. The instrument cluster amplifier is calibrated to the fuel gauge. The instrument cluster amplifier and fuel gauge must be replaced as a system. Instrument Cluster Gauge Amplifier/Check Gauge Module
The instrument cluster gauge amplifier electrically averages fuel sender readings so the fuel gauge displays actual fuel level and not fluctuations due to sloshing in fuel tank. The instrument cluster gauge amplifier is a small printed circuit board which latches into a pocket on the back of the instrument cluster. The electrical connections for ignition, ground, input from fuel sender and output to fuel gauge are made through a spring-type connector on the instrument cluster gauge amplifier to the instrument cluster printed circuit (10K843) on the instrument cluster. There are no provisions for calibration or adjustment of the instrument cluster gauge amplifier.
Fuel Sending Unit
The fuel sending unit consists of a variable screened resistor made up of a ceramic substrate. It is controlled by the action of an attached float in the fuel tank. When the fuel level is low, resistance in the sending unit is low. When the fuel level is high, the resistance in the sending unit is high. As the float moves from empty to full, the resistance will gradually and continuously increase. f9e3b50.gif

well have problems with the voltage regulator on back of the instrument cluster..... no power to the guage it self... if good then check sending unit in tank.. also make sure copper float on sending unit is not full of gas,.. they get pin holes then fill with gas and dont float....because you ground the wire and no change.. i would start with instrument cluster

Fuel and temp sensor problem toyota corolla two door 1989


Find the temperature sensor(usually around the thermostat housing)'disconnect connector and ground it with a test light. Observe the inside gauge. It should slowly go up. If so, change sensor. Do the same for the fuel gauge located on the fuel tank. If gauge move to fill as you groung the sending unit wire, change sending unit. Test the right wire. Ask for further assistance.
