Question about 1999 Ford Taurus
If the car started with starting fluid and you are sure you hear the fuel pump priming the system it may be an obstruction in the line after the pump and before the injectors there is a fuel filter usually located on the fuel fill side by the gas tank that may need changing.

Assuming the battery is good, you might need to replace the spark plugs. They will only last about 100,000 miles at best. You might also have a vacuum leak somewhere. If you can get to at least one spark plug and remove it, you can then see how bad it is worn out.
The other suggestion would be to see if fuel is coming out of the fuel pump at all. If so, then back to checking the plugs, If not, the fuel pump would be the next thing.
