Question about 2000 BMW 3 Series

1 Answer

I drive a 2000 BMW 328CI. It has just a little over 100k miles on it. It runs great, well up until a few days ago. I was driving home and the fuel light came on, but i thought i could make home and i ended up running out of gas while going up a hill. I tried starting it again (i was in heavy traffic) but it wouldn't start. I ended up getting help and gas then my car ran fine the rest of the day. Then the next day i was driving and i noticed that i wasn't getting enough acceleration. i parked my car, went into the store and when i came out and tried to start it again it turned over, ran for about 3 seconds and then the whole car started rocking and then shut down. i couldn't start it again for the rest of the day. The next day i went back and it started fine, no issues. now today it won't start again. I think it may be because i ran out of gas and kept trying to start it, enabling the sludge at the bottom of the gas tank to get in the fuel line and or filter. My buddy thinks i may need to replace the filter or the pump. I hope it is not the pump. Can anyone help? Thank you in advance.

Hi! I do suspect that the fuel filter is clogged badly for dirt and rust may have got into it. As a first course of action please do replace the fuel filter. Hope this helps and have a good one!

Dirt surely blocked the fuel flow thats why the car has fuel shortage. Check the connection of the power to the fuel rail too for it is loose or faulty the car will act unusual.

I had a similar problem that turned out to be dirt contaminated gasoline. The "fix" was always to replace the fuel filter but it would not stay fixed. In particular, each time I started having problems it was after I let the gas tank level get low.

What I did that you can consider was:
  1. But a new fuel filter.
  2. Get a 5 gallon gas can.filled with fresh gas.
  3. Get some cheap gasoline proof container (or several containers) for waste gasoline.
  4. Make a "vacuum cleaner" out of an electric in-line low pressure gas pump, some low pressure gas hose, and a couple of pieces of copper tube, 20 ft of two conductor wire, and two alligator clips. It connects hydraulically copper tube to suck out the gas tank, fuel hose, pump, fuel hose, copper tube to go into the gas can. The wire and clips are to hook the fuel pump to your car battery.
  5. Drive the car until the fuel level is low.
  6. Remove the fuel pump module.
  7. Vacuum the gas tank into the waste gas container through the opening left by the fuel module. Try to get the dirt off the bottom.
  8. When you have vacuumed all you can get, stop awhile and let the dirt settle in the waste container.
  9. Vacuum the gasoline from the waste container back into the gas tank. Vacuum high in the container so the dirt stays in the waste. Try to wash any dirt in the gas tank to below the fuel module opening.
  10. Stop a while and let the dirt settle.
  11. Repeat vacuuming and washing as many times as needed to get the tank clean and empty.
  12. Inspect the tank interior with a mirror and flashlight looking for rust, dirt, etc.
  13. Replace the fuel module.
  14. Install the new fuel filter.
  15. Pour in the new gasoline.
And hopefully you are good to go.

2000 Subaru Outback Wagon (100K miles) with P0420 Code

I do not know for sure if this is the problem you are having, But, I have noticed that from 95 up to 2002 I have seen a lot of PO420 codes that have been just the sensor. I do not know if it was a weak sensor or just that program telling it that it is below threshold. I did notice that if the vehicles are run for a long trip at highway speed it goes out. I wish you luck and have a great day.

Bmw 325i 2003 stall

Sounds like you have a small bit of dirt or grit in the fuel system when accelerating it is drawn with enough force to cut off the fuel supply then is released when engine at Idle.
1 run liquid fuel line/injector cleaner in 1 tank
2 check fuel lines for debris
3 change fuel filters
4 have fuel tank flushed
here is trouble shooting order less expense to greater.

I think your problem might be your fuel relay which is situated next to the fuse box in the engine compartment.
