Question about 2000 Lexus RX 300

1 Answer

Trying to find out what is causing a 2000 RX300 to stall out and or not start unless your constantly giving it gas. It just won't idle at times and does not show any fault codes.

I think I'd check out the air flow sensor. Its situated between the air filter housing and the throttle body. Another place of interest may be the fuel filter or the submersible pump. You'll need to get a fuel pump pressure test done. That should only be carried out with the correct instruments and proceedures. Try the first suggestion first though

Stalls after start up, Stalls when braking, then runs fine after a few minutes

Check the ECU engine temperature sensor. If it thinks the engine is hot, it will struggle to run when cold.

Car stalls unless gas constantly supplied otherwise car dies all dash lights come on usually on start up

Inspect and clean IAC valve (idle air control valve), replace if necessary. If IAC is Ok, please provide additional info!! Does your vehicle experience random or repeated hard starts?? Is your "service engine soon" light on?? These vehicles are known for faulty crank position sensor, usual symptoms are: hard starts, random/constant stalls, SES light on, misfire or no start. Some or all symptoms may or may not occur simultaneously.

Car stalls at stop signs

will it re-start right back up?
next time try to keep your foot on the gas pedal to see if it stay running ( be careful when you do this, if you give too much gas the car will over come the brake and cause accident )
if it stay running then you need to replace an idle air control valve

85 ford tbird will start fine but then will dies when put into drive or reverse unless I am constantly tapping the gas, in which case it barely stays running. What would cause this?

I had an 84 Bird. There were 2 places to set the idle. If someone has worked on it or if the first setting fails, it can give you that problem. Check for a loose vacuum line going to a carburetor part. Sometimes putting in a new air filter will cause the vacuum line to fall off.

The next thing to check is an EGR valve that is not closing. This will cause the engine to stall at idle.

Finally, if you need a diagnosis the Autozone or O'reilly auto parts people will scan your car for free. They may be able to sell you a part you can put on yourself to solve the problem.
Good Luck

My 2000 rx300 is not holding its idle rpm when i try and start it. It runs though if I hold the gas pedal. what do I need to check or what do I need to replace to fix this problem?

I have a 2001 RX300 and I had this EXACT problem just a year ago. I recommend cleaning your idle air control valve. It does not need replaced. If you take it to a dealership, they want to replace it for $400.00. Just clean it, trust me it works. I cleaned mine with throttle body cleaner and I have not had the problem since. I did this at 80,000 miles and I now have 120,000 miles on it. Go to lexusownersclub.com to see more info about this condition. I used this site to get the steps on how to access the idle air control valve (it's underneath the right side of the throttle boddy). Clean it with Q-tips and throttle body cleaner - this is what worked for me. The I.A.C.V. is a round mechanism that needs to turn within it's housing - when it gets dirty then it doesn't turn and this causes a rough idle or it causes the car to stall. The I.A.C.V. gets dirty because of the recirculation of smog (for emission controls).

Truck starts but will not idle

IT COULD POSSIBLY BE THE INTAKE GASKETS. FORD HAS A PROBLEM WITH THE GASKETS GOING BAD. IF THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT IS ON AND GIVING YOU CODES PO171 AND PO174 I WOULD CHECK THE GASKETS BY SPRAYING CARB. CLEANER AROUND THE INTAKE WHILE THE ENGINE IS RUNNING. IF THE IDLE SPEEDS UP THEN THAT IS YOUR PROBLEM.
