The fuel filter is a rather overrated part. The only way that thing gets clogged is if something got put in your gas tank. Most likely you do not need to replace it but its can't really hurt. They are fairly cheap to replace. You can get one at and auto parts store for a very reasonable cost and you should be able to do it yourself.

Hello, you can try resetting the ECU. Disconnect the battery, or remove fuse #6 from the fuse box under the hood. Wait a minute before you re-install (or reconnect) it.

Spark plugs would be a good place to start along with an oil change, put some fuel treatment in your tank and drive it a while it should come out of it.

I have a 2003 Jetta TDI with 90k. Until recently I have consistently gotten 46-48 mpg. Over the past 3 months the mpg has been decreasing. The current mpg is about 30. I change the oil every 3k...

don't know about the MPG it could be a lot of things. I have a 2001 Jetta TDI. You should NEVER change the oil at 3K miles. VW recommends 10K miles for a reason. The Synthetic oil has additives to remove varnish and it does that but it needs some time to replace the varnish and properly protect sensitive engine parts. 3K is oil changes are not a good thing for a TDI......Just use the right oil and change at 10K

New tune up.and air filter, pcv valve, and change the fuel filter, and the oil, replace the oil with a full synthtic oil.Use quality parts from napa auto parts,or some good brand filters and ignition parts.Use a bottle of lucas fuel treatment to clean the fuel system, and injectors, and clean out the plenium(upper intake) with some intake cleaner, spray.

here are a couple of different problems that will cause bad fuel mileage. first is air filter, still getting low mpg. then the pcv valve. clean fuel system. the cost of filter about $20 pcv was $12 and the fuel system cleaning and pcv is easy to do. when cleaning the fuel system, clean the injectors the fuel rail and the throttle body be sure that you have them change the oil or that you do it after they work on it. Notice whether the oil smelled like fuel then your engine needs platinum plugs for best spark they can run as much as $8 each.

I'm getting terrible mpg. The gas guage not always accurate.

Take it to Autozone or O'reillys for a free diagnostic. You might want to disconnect the battery for 10 minutes and see if the warnings go away.

Low Mileage

clean the throttle body.the throttle body can get gummed up and cause issues.
put a fuel additive to clean the system.

these other items all contribute to fuel usage.
spark plugs.
o2 sensor
air flow meter
fuel filter
idle air controller (IAC)

My mpg keeps decreasing. Was told I needed a new air filter, got it, but the avg MPG is now used to be 28.5. What could be the problem?

I would try a regular tune-up, plugs, wires. If you did, did you change your fuel filter?, cuz that would help keep your injectors clean and flowing normal.

High gas mileage (15- 20 l per 100km)

try changing the oil also it will cause the engine to burn more fuel with bad oil because it gets hot and evaporates it alot more
