Question about 2002 Jaguar X-Type
Go to autozone and have them check the error codes to find out the possible source of the problem.
Most likely an Oxygen sensor.
Your mechanic should be able to tell you more than you related here.
He should be able to do the same test as autozone.
Autozone does this for free, in hopes that the DIY guys buy parts to fix from the zone
