My rear hatch won't stay up when you lift it up?

If it has gas struts then you can safely say that the struts have lost their gas charge. Often gas struts that are a bit tired will work OK in summer and not so well in winter when the pressure in them is lower due to the colder weather. They are quick and easy to replace and generally quite cheap (less than $60 a pair). There are companies that will come to your house and fit them on the spot for a reasonable price.

How do I insert trunk stays in 2005 XJR

Do you mean the gas struts that hold up the trunk lid? They are usually secured by a single stud at each end which you just unbolt and replace the strut while an assistant supports the trunk lid. Or they are fitted to small ball type mounts in which case carefully pry the strut off and pop the replacement back on again while the lid is supported.

Only happened today.....the boot door will not stay open, the arms don't seem to be doing anything? How do I resolve this please

If you are talking about the upper tailgate, one or both gas struts have lost pressure. They can the regassed but the cost of replacements is reasonable and a better option. To remove a strut, use a small flat blade screwdriver to prise up the lock tabs than just pull the strut off the pin. Also prise up the lock tabe when fitting the new one

THE GAS STRUTS THAT HOLD OPEN THE REAR HATCH ON MY WIFES 2000 ODYSSEY HAVE BECOME WEAK AND NO LONGER WORK. HOW HARD IS IT TO REPLACE THEM?

Not difficult at all. They are usually a ball and socket fitting with a locking clip that fits over the socket part. You can lift off the clip with a small screw driver, but be careful as it can spring away, and then just pull the strut off the ball. (Sometimes the struts are fitted onto studs and only needs the nuts to be removed to pull off the struts).

Change rear gas struts on 98 Buick Lasabre

No, it isn't...
You need:
-20" breaker bar
-torque wrench
-Liquid wrench (or WD-40 if you don't have any)
-Jack and stands
-sockets to fit all of the connections

1. Remove the back seat:
Bottom cushion comes out by pushing it rearwards and lifting, undo the 2 seatbelt bolts and 2 push nuts and remove the back cushion

2. Jack and support the frame of the car
3. Remove the wheels
4. Place a jack under the control arm where the spring connects to it and put a little tension on the spring. (this is so that when you unbolt the strut the control arm won't come crashing down)
5. Remove the air tube by rotating the spring clip 90 degrees and pulling on the tube at the connector.
5. Remove the lower strut bolts. (Exprerience shows me that removing the lower one first will save you lots of agony...)
6. Remove the two strut mounting bolts that are behind the back seat cushion.
7. Compress the strut and remove from the vehicle.
8. Installation is opposite of the removal. Remember to use a new mount if the one you are removing is worn. I recommend Quick-strut 171798. Good Luck!

P.S. Torque Specs are:
Lower Strut bolts- 140 ft/lbs
Upper strut bolts- 30 ft/lbs
Mount to strut bolt - 70ft/lbs

Need to replace the Stabilus lift o mat gas

Use a screwdriver to pull up/out the tab on the ends where they hook onto the ball. Then measure the length of the strut fully extended. That will give you the size. On my motorhome, I needed 100 lb struts on the doors. Your struts may have the lb printed on them.

The driver seat for my 1988 325 coupe is broken.

Yes, it is a common problem in the E30 series but it's usually caused by the small gas struts in the seat mechanisms. It can easily be fixed by someone with the right tools. The gas struts have to be replaced, or re-gassed after the seat is removed from the car.  The tricky bit is compressing the new or repaired gas struts during the re-fit to the seat structure.

Replacing boot struts

Hi GB52. Just done this myself, should take 15 minutes perside max. 1/ remove rear seat cushion by bumping the centre back and up, lower the back rests down. 2/ Unscrew the striker plate from the seat side bolster and the bolt at the lower edge of the bolster Removing the bolster takes a bit of fiddling. 3/ use a flat-head screwdriver to release the strut spring clips - use the new ones as a guide. 4/ remove the old strut and fit the new one. reinstall the bolster, bolt and strike plate. note; when replacing the rear seat cushion, ensure the seat belts are fed through first and check that the seat retaining clips properly engage the floor panel brackets.

Hope this helps,

Davo
