The first place I would look is the shift linkage for wear and a sloppy connection from wear.
adjustments may be made as a possible fix on the linkage rod.

Before you make any other moves, I would try having the transmission flushed and refilled and filters changed and if that doesn't work, you may have burned out the modulator so you may have to shop around for another transmission or have that one rebuilt, whichever would be feasibly financial for you.

you have to be careful that it is not the safety neutral switch.since stall means different things to different people,it is hard to tell exactly what is the issue.if the safety neutral switch, which is wired to the start and ignition circuits is bad,it could kill the engine.
jack up the vehicle and look for bad or shorted wires or connectors before doing anything else.
the other thing is how it behaves with no load on it. put a floor jack under the rear differential and raise it just enough for the wheels to be off the ground a couple inches.put it into reverse with no load and see if the wheels turn in 2wd mode.

SOURCE: Hard to get into reverse
If your clutch is working properly and you have no trouble going into other gears, likely the reverse synchro is a bit worn. (in the trans) About the only thing You can try is engaging first gear, then selecting reverse. sometimes this will get gears to mesh more easily.
