Question about 1998 Ford Escort

3 Answers

Because maintenance is better than repairs, But I don't want to waste $$$, I have four questions: Does a 1998 Ford Escort need to have the Power Steering Fluid replaced? If my Serpentine Drive Belt is cracking how long can I wait before getting it replaced? Same as #2 in terms of a leaking rear wheel cylinder which would be replaced in pairs. How important is it to have the Brake Fluid flushed? Thanks! Albert

Great questions that I will answer in order. 1. Do you need to change P/S fluid? The vast majority of manufactures do not have a scheduled time to replace the P/S fluid, however IMHO it is money well spent. I would recommend you change it every 75,000 miles. A total change of the fluid is very involved and pretty much has to be done by a pro. You can however change it yourself over time. Simply use a turkey baster to **** as much of the fluid as possible out of the reservoir. The fill it back up with the correct fluid. Turn the wheels lock to lock about 5 times to remove all air. Do this each week for 4 weeks and you will have much cleaner fluid. 2. If your serpentine belt is cracking it can break at any moment leaving you stranded and paying for a tow and possibly having an accident. Small hair line cracks are normal but larger cracks are not. If your car has over 100,000 miles replace the belt. 3. A leaking wheel cylinder should be repaired immediately as you could have brake failure at any moment. 4. It is important to install new brake fluid at a minimum of every 100,000 miles. Brake fluid attracts moisture and moisture causing corrosion and rust. This is more than likely why the wheel cylinder is leaking.

Of these, only the wheel cylinder is a must do. If not repaired, the fliud will soak the pads and cause the brake to lock. I don't flush brakes or power steering systems unless they act up.
The belt will last longer, but I suggest you might go ahead and change it, because you can use the old one as an emergency spare (keep in trunk). OK?

Both turn signals on my 1998 Ford Escort zx2 don't flash.

The 98 Escort is actually a Mazda 323 with Ford trim. It uses a solid state flasher relay for both turn signals and hazard lights.
The relay is behind the speedometer. My guess is the relay has died.
You can look it up online or check with your local auto parts store to get a visual.

Where can i find a rebuilt Power control Module for a 1998 Ford Escort zx2

Don't know, maybe a Ford dealer. But I would just buy a used one from a salvage yard. Unless they're seriously abused, they don't go bad that often.
