Question about 1983 Ford Econoline

Open Question

I have a 1983 ford econoline motor home 351 engine. i live in edmonton alberta (very cold winter) i just purchased it and would like some advise or "how to" winterize i need to tarp it? do i disconect the water hose from the pump and put it in the antifreeze and pump direct from the container? do i drain the hot water tank? i never did get any manual with the unit. your suggestions would help. i need before the weekend. thanks.

tighten the valve cover gaskets... if that doesn't stop the leak replace them.

I know from experience that if the coolant is to low ( not just the freon levels in the compresor but the antifreeze/coolant level as well) the AC system will not cool and will blow hot. Check the coolant Antifreeze and freon levels, even with the Coolant being a little low my 1998 Ford E150 Van will blow hot. After you have ruled out of these possibilities and the chance it is the thermostat most likely the problem is what Ford calls the "Flap" it controls the air flow through the vent system when you switch from Heat to AC. When the Flap is working it closes off one systems air flow so as to not interfere with the current climate selection.

Theres 2 pumps one in the tank, lift pump, and one in the chassis rail under the driver side. The one in the tank is cheap, the one in the rail is not. The one in the tank only produces low pressure to prime the main pump and if it is broken, may not cause that much of an issue except when starting. the one in the rail is a no-start if it fails. The idea is that the rail pump can supply high pressure for the injectors, so a fuel pressure test at the injector rail will determine which pump is playing up. Hope that helps Tim

if all you heard is a click when turning your key and after a few try's it will crank then the starter contacts are worn out, you can replace them easy or just get a new not rebuild starter. one more thing put a volt meter on your battery and crank your engine if voltage drops below 10.5 v battery may be at fault or starter is drawing to much current.

different engines were put in depending what you orded 351 Cubic inch 302 Cubic inch and a 6 cylinder not sure of cubic inches

Hello it is winter here in edmonton Alberta Canada and it is getting very cold. My car will not start. It will turn over and make a rwa rwa rwa sound then just shut off. Any Ideas?

I would suggest you have your battery tested to make sure its up to the task.
Your starter may also be pulling to much current.

Normal winter prep would be an ignition tune up and a lighter grade motor oil.

Leaking antifreeze and it's not a pipe or the water pump

Freeze plugs are usually on the side of engine block. If the freeze plugs leaking, it is a simple job to replace them without removing the engine. You should get under the truck to locate the source of leaking antifreeze.
