Question about 2001 Lexus RX 300
The dealer is not necessarily a rip off, just somewhat more costly than an independant shop. The cause of this issue is what is going to be costly. White smoke is coolant and something either cracked (very expensive, warped (more cost friendly), of damaged. It WILL NOT BE A HEAD GASKET, as a head gasket can only be the victim, not the cause. Warpage, for example manifests as a gasket failure, but replace gasket only and you will fail again pretty quick, warpage gets resolved with fly cutting the head, new flat surface and the repair will last.
