Question about 2004 Mercury Grand Marquis
Hello, You need to have someone scan the car for defects. The "Check Engine" light will record problems but only for 25 to 35 Startups. Now both Autozone and Oreillys will scan it for free and some other places may charge you to scan it.
The scan is a big help, and some of the newer scanners will recommend the most likely repair part. The system is not foolproof, but can identify individual problems, but it may also give you a group of parts that can have the same problem Code. For instance, Code 401 can be a group of several parts in the Emissions system, but soot in the passages to these Emission parts can cause a False alarm. It takes an experienced person to know to clean the soot out of the engine before blaming and replacing unneeded parts. Yet in other instances, the scanner can tell you which one of 8 Sparkplugs is missfiring so you do not needlessly replace 7 good plugs.
With the scan it is likely you can get the correct part to fix your problem. Or you can use the scan to verify what another place wants to do to fix your car. Until you get a readout, we really can't do more than recommend getting a scan. That is your first step.
