PO741 is transmission control solenoid stuck. The repair is done replacing the transmission control solenoid.

What you misunderstood is about the need for rebuilding transmission. TCC is not located inside the transmission box, but in the valve bodyright behind the transmission pan cover.

The job is more or less the following:

Drain tranny fluid.
Remove transmission pan (held by bolts).
Remove the transmission filter and O-ring.
Test solenoid with Ohmmeter.
Unscrew and remove solenoid.
Track and remove solenoid wiring going to TCM.
Install new solenoid.
Rewire the wiring harness, replacement solenoid comes with the harness.
Install new O-ring.
Reassemble pan cover replacing the gasket.
Refill tranny fluid.

If problem is only the solenoid you may be charged about two hours labor plus parts.
Effectively $450 may look a bit of an high price for solenoid replacement , but you stated that the mechanic encountered additional problems and that there may be more parts to be replaced.
I think they are sincere, and they will need to work several extra hours on the transmission to fix the clutch (not to rebuld tranny, that is over $1000).

Previous freestar models suffered by a number of tranny related problems, and fixing TCC often resulted quite expensive. I guess that new model are not exempt from this problems. They are probably dealing with a slipping transmission and that will cost extra because of extra hours in the repair. Discuss the details with your mechanic.

As testimonial, here a forum with users getting into same kind of troubles with Freestar TCC and slipping transmission.

If you repute my solution helpful, then please take some times to accept the solution. Providing good repair tips requires time and skills, and your feedback is important for us.

Regards.

Ginko.

Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) P0741, Torque Converter Clutch (TCC) Excessive Slip, Transaxle Chuggle, Slip/Surge (Inspect and/or Replace Various Internal Transaxle Components).

If the Check Engine Light is coming on and off and there seems to be no symptoms then it leads me to believe it's an intermittent fault. Now diagnosing whether it's a problem inside the transmission or electrical isn't something we can do over the Internet. However with that said, it's not necessarily true to say the tranny would have been dead by now. If there is an internal problem you may have still shortened the transmission's lifespan even though it hasn't died. Have you checked the transmission fluid level? When was the fluid changed last? If you haven't taken the vehicle in to get the trouble code looked at I suspect you may not be keeping up with the transmission service levels as well. Regardless, if you decide to not fix the problem, the transmission may last a week, a year, or a decade. It's too hard to tell without physically diagnosing the problem. If you'd like to do a bit of work yourself, then start with the easy stuff, grab a repair manual, check the fluid level, and check all the wiring & connectors to/from the transmission for starters. My personal recommendation to you is to take it to a qualified transmission specialist (or the dealer) and pay the 1 or 2 hour diagnosis charge. In the long run it might save you money.

Keep us updated; good luck!

I would tell you that you can fix it another way. But unfortunately if I told you anything other than they are right. I would have you spending more money that was unnecessary. It is too bad, but if there are metal shavings in the transmission, then this means that something is broken inside the transmission. You can probably put it back together and drive it for a week or so. But the transmission will need rebuilt.

What your doing continuing to drive it with ANY
Transmission issues, will ruin the trans & most likely
has already

At the very least your going to have to remove the valve body
& clean it & update it

May as well just pull the unit & rebuild it ,seeing as it is
a transaxle & the one out there with the most problems
& shortest life span

May I suggest you sell it & stay away from vans forever

I know they are popular & having owned a trans shop, i know
there are too many issues to own one & they are not a safe
vehicle if you get in an accident,so much so, I won't ride in one

I only drove them to road test after a trans repair, when i had
the shop & never since

Try adjusting the transmission cable that comes from the throttle body. That is where the transmission gets it's input for how much throttle is being requested. If it's misadjusted and thinks you're requesting too little throttle, it may try to downshift more than normal. It's been a while since I've done this on mine so I don't remember if this is the exact procedure or if there are additional steps, but you have to pop the clip for the throttle to transmission cable and slide the cable as far in as possible then put the clip back. Next you'll want to press the gas pedal all the way down (may have to use extra force). You'll hear a pop and you're done. If you mark beforehand, you can see if adjusting did anything.

These cars are known for transmission problems. I was told it was a design flaw. Nearly all of these vehicles require new/rebuild on transmissions at just about this many miles. My mother's also failed at that mileage, but hers completely failed. Plan on rebuilding/replacing this tranny.

Sounds like the transmission got overheated. I would not worry if shutting it off and restarting got rid of the fault.

How can i fix my mazda 626 transmission range

The transmission range sensor aka neutral safety switch is located underneath the air filter on top of the transaxle and very easy to access. Replace this part (around $50) and it will solve your problem.
What happens is this, when your tranny warms up, it disperses heat to the sensor switch and if its faulty or worn out, will send faulty relays to the transmissiom computer module (TCM) and makes the transmission shift irratically (OD to 3rd and back while driving at freeway speeds). You tranny is not overheating like most people believe, its the switch. Mechanics are telling alot of people that their tranny needs replaced. Watch Out For These People!! They only want your money!!
