I assume this is a manual transmission, if it is you should use a 75w/90 synthetic gear oil ( it takes 2 ltrs total from empty ) If its auto you should use VW/ATF and a total refill is 3 ltrs

You should diagnose the check engine light. You can have this done at a mechanic or alternatively you can rent a scanner from a parts store. What may feel like a slipping transmission can be a misfire.
Depending on the year of the car.....Usually the diagnostic plug is
fitted in the centre consol.. A small plastic strip must be
removed.....in front of the gear shift...below the radio.
