Turn the ignition on and listen for a whirring sound from the fuel tank area, if no sound, turn engine over very briefly and listen, if still no sound, suspect fuel pump/ relay fault. May be worth having it plugged in and check for fault code.

My mule will not keep running. Stopped suddenly after good start. Replaced the fuel pump. Still will not keep running. Fires. Then stops. Fires on starting fluid. What could it be?

When you say it fires with starting fluid can you keep it running with the starting fluid or does it just fire while cranking the starter then stop when the key is turned to run if it keeps running with the starting fluid then you still have a pump problem or the filter could be plugged or the carb could be bad but if it'd fuel injection then it might just not getting enough pressure fuel injection takes high pressure

My lexus sc400 wont start

You are in a position where you need to test the fuel source. There is usually a "port" on the fuel injector rail which is used to test the fuel pressure. There are pressure gauges to borrow at Autoloan, Oreillys, Advance, or similar.

Where the difference is in testing is how the ECU may be broken. Using starting fluid, if the engine fires and attempts to run, then the firing order is okay and for some reason, the fuel system is dry. But if the engine makes no attempt to fire with starting fluid, then it is a spark problem and probably the ECU.

A person with a Scanner should be able to get a signal from the car if there is either defect. Something severe enough to prevent starting should make a warning light activate to "check engine" or a wrench symbol to appear on the dash.

98 chevy 1500 starts and then shuts right off have replaced fuel pump and filter ,crank sensor, cam sensor ,oil sen. coil, ign.mod and PCM

On some chevys the oil pressure sending unit closes the circuit to continue the fuel pump to run after start. In the event of a wreck ,the car stops running thus no oil pressure thus turns off power to the fuel pump .A safety to help prevent fires. When you first start the car, the computer turns on the fuel pump for about 20 seconds just enough time to start and allow the oil pressure sending unit to close the circuit to allow it to continue running. when the car car has NO oil pressure or the sending unit fails ,it will start then shut down..as many times as you try to start. replace the oil pressure sending unit and secure a good conection. 89 ranger i was driving than it just stalled. i have spark, i have fuel but no fire. but it wont start, if i put starting fluid in the intake it will run for a second then stall.

If you can keep spraying staring fluid and it stays running then the fuel pump is no pumping. only with a pressure gauge can you test it

Fuel pump may be getting weak. If pressure is not high enough the injectors wont open.

Dont know whether its the fuel pump or something else

How did you determine its not the fuel pump?It could be the fuel filter but I dont think so.Your truck requires a certain amount of fuel pressure to start and a different amount to run properly. You would have to check what your fuel pressure is to say its not the pump.It should be something like 65 psi to start and 55psi to run.Even though you can hear the pump come on when turn the key it might not be putting out enough pressure to start the truck.I realize im a little late with this post but it might helpfull to others.

1992 Chevy Lumina will not start when temp is below 0 degrees

Try changing the fuel filter, water trapped in it can freeze. Its a 92 and probably time for a fuel pump. They don't like water either.(Meythonol Fuel) Always change fuel filter when adding antifreeze to fuel

1990 geo wont start!

With the limited information given, I will have to assume that you are certain that the injector/injectors are "firing" properly. You said you are getting fire, so I will assume that you have definitely found a spark. The only things needed to make an engine run are air, fuel, and fire. You just have to have everything in the right order. It sounds as if you have a timing belt that may have been a little to loose, and has now jumped a few teeth, causing the valves to open and close at the wrong times. This is one of the only things that could have happened, and still allow you to have spark, as the timing belt runs the camshaft, which runs the distributor. The last thing that I could think of would be contaminated fuel, or low fuel pressure.....You would have fuel, maybe not enough, but you would have fuel. First thing I would check, would be the ignition timing, just to make sure the belt has not jumped time.
