You will have to take the under tray off to access the sump drain bung, the bung is normally a 19mm spanner size, Don't run engine until oil is correct level, as damage can be done to catalytic convertor. ( you will have to jack car up pretty high to remove cover, and be sure to use axle stands to secure vehicle )

I was just given a 2006 VW jetta. Wanting to do an oil change on it before anything else. Book says 5w-40. Then says "if need to add oil between oil changes to use synthetic-based oil" my ? Is regular oil...

Hi, the reason for using synthetic oil if need a top up is because the oil in the engine is breaking down over time, and putting the same oil back to top up doesn't mix together as well as synthetic oil does, every 10k sounds about right for a VW of that age, My Golf is 08 and is the same

How much and type of gear box oil do I have to use in my mk4 golf, 1.6 litre engine transmission( gearbox)

Mark 4 VW Golf Manual Gearbox
VW has a specific blend of gear oil for that gearbox that you need to buy from VW dealer Parts department. If you cannot get it there, you can use a 75w-90 fully synthetic automotive gear oil .

The capacity is about 2.2 quarts (US) so ensure you buy enough.

If you are changing the gear oil yourself the vehicle must be level. Completely loosen or remove the fill plug first, to ensure you will be able to refill it ,before you remove the drain plug and drain the old oil out of the box. You will need a fluid pump in order to pump the new oil into the box and you keep adding the gear oil until it begins to run out the fill opening. It is full when it stops running out the fill opening so it is important the vehicle is level when you are doing this service.

You will need a good 17 mm Allen key to remove and refit the drain and fill plugs in the gearbox.
The fill plug is on the front left side of the transmission case while the drain plug is on the bottom by the dog bone.

Automatic transmission not shifting gears

If have had this problem many times on Mk4 vw golf.
The transmission oil must be fully drained, frop the gearbox sump and replace the filter kit (widley available). Make sure everything is really clean, especially the oil pickup pipe and screen.
I generally measure the oil removed and refill the same amount. you must use the correct transmission oil....so check. I think its dextron3 or similar..but all stockists will have a listing for it.
There is no dipstick , the only way to test is using a scanner or trial and error ( i do not recommend the latter).
Chech vw forums for diagrams showing the drain plug on the sump...you never get all the oil out due to height of the neck and the fact that the torque convertor and oil coolers still have oil in them.
good luck

Vw golf oil pressure

Most likely you have some clogged oil passages. You can try a cleaning additive but I prefer to substitute 1 quart of oil for 1 quart of transmission fluid during an oil change. Run the motor (in the driveway) for about 10 minutes, drain it and refill it with clean oil that the manufacturer recommends.

If that doesn't work, you may need to replace the engine.

Fuse link.....I've seen `em knock out all power.Or mighty be a main relay or fuse.Fuse links are incorporated into wiring and act like fuses, blowing if a severe short or over-amperage problem occurs. don-ohio

What oil should I use for my 2002 1.9 TDi VW Golf?

Use 5W-30 for cold weather, gives you an easy engine start and good gas millage, in summer time you can use 10W-30.

Vw Golf 98 clicking sound from engine when starting

If it just clicks when you are trying to start, the battery is low, near dead and needs recharge or replace.
If it starts and strange clicking continues, it is a sign of hydraulic valve lifters not functioning properly --which can be caused by low oil pressure (because of low oil level or bad oil pump). If the battery is good and drains dead after a while --something is connected that should not be. Even your dome light can do that --or the headlights on --or the parking lights on. Check the oil level, if low, add oil and check again.

The CD Player in my VW Golf 2002 modelis

Without knowing the model of radio fitted to your car I would make the following assumptions

The CD Player is Locked Out:

Either

Because the battery has been disconnected and the clearing sequence in your handbook was not followed correctly you may have to wait several hours between attempts to unlock it and you will need the original code at hand as a fail safe

Or

The CD player is from another VW car and the on-board code in the memory does not match that one.

Resume:

You need to look out the little book that came with the car and read up on clearing the code for that particular model.

Last resort is a VW Dealer who should provide assistance free of charge , according to the handbook
