The symptom can be typical of degraded transmission oil which does not behave correctly when cold. Change the transmission oil and if there's a transmission oil filter then replace that as well. If you live in an especially cold or an especially hot climate, then you may require a different grade of transmission oil. Your nearest Pontiac servicing agent can advise you which grade suits local conditions.

Also give serious consideration to a full service on the rest of the vehicle if it hasn't been done in the last year/10000 miles.

Why wont my transmission engage that i replaced?

The key may be in how long it has been sice you friend used it last.
If it sat up for an extended time period the seals could have dried/cracked due to no lubrication, there could be a varnish buildup in the valve body as well.

Just a guess on this.

If it did sit for a while, I would recommend adding Lucas transmission additive ( around 12-15 bucks the large bottle) to the trans and letting it sit and idle and run up and down for a while trying to soften the seals and cleaning varnish. It may take several hours. While in idle occasionally put the trans in reverse, neutral, drive, low 1,2 etc to have the selector ask all gears to move.

I don't normally promote brands but personal experience says that this stuff works....if there is a problem it can help with.

If this doesn't help I'm lost and it could be a trip to the trans shop. Hope not.

Good luck!

Transmission doesn't engage

Try changing the fluid and filter. Use the approved Mopar fluid and not the cheap stuff.

Manual transmission reverse is blocked

Hi Mitch, If when engaging first gear you have a grinding and clunk try pumping the clutch pedal before engaging reverse. My reason for saying that is that if the pedal takes low to the floor you may have a defective hydrolic clutch line. If it doesn't work I think I would suspect a bent selector rod. Regards John

Take it back make them fix it. It sound like the pump in the transmission is going. Thick fluid pumps easier that thin fluid and it would talk about 5 minutes for it to heat up going from thick to thin.

Check to make sure the transmission has enough oil or put in new oil. It could also need a new transmission filter if that is applicable. Anything other than that and you are getting more expensive most likely.
