Question about Volkswagen Golf

1 Answer

HI I'VE A 1996 1.4 PETROL VW GOLF. ENGINE WILL NOT START BUT TURNS OVER OK. CLEANED DISTRIBUTOR AND PLUGS BUT NO SPARK WHEN TESTED OR SMELL OF PETROL ON THEM.I PAID SOMEONE TO PUT A DIAGNOSTIC KIT ON AND HE SAID IT WAS A KNOCK SENSOR PROBLEM. I'M SCEPTICAL ABOUT THIS. IS THIS FEASIBLE OR IS IT MORE LIKELY TO BE A ENERGY MANAGEMENT SYSTEM FAULT? MANY THANKS ****

You're right. knock sensor will not prevent starting. even if it failed on, it would only change timing a bit--not enough to prevent start. If you don't have fuel on the plugs, listen for the pump to come on when you turn the key to run. For additional troubleshooting steps, please see my post at http://www.fixya.com/cars/r5821173-doesnt_car_start_gasoline_engines
Focus first on the fuel.

VW golf cabriolet do not give petrol. The petrolpump is ok...? Codes are checked (problem, HALL something, but has it something to do with the petrol?

Hi there,

I suggest you do a fuel pressure and volume test also.

But first, you need to ensure you have good spark. Make a spark tester by gapping an old spark plug to 0.200" and sticking it on a plug wire. Lay it on a metal ground and crank the engine over and see if there is spark. If no spark, then the problem may lie in the ignition system.

Check for battery voltage at the positive side (15) of the coil with the key on. If there is no voltage check the yellow wire from the ignition switch. If there is power there you have a break in the wire somewhere in between.

If you have power to the coil, stick your spark tester in the end of the coil wire.

Then, with the key on, hook a jumper wire to the negative (1) side of the coil and MOMENTARILY ground it. If you get a spark, then the Hall Effect sensor in the distributor is either bad or not getting power.

At this point I would recommend getting a Car Service Manual from the reference section of your local public library. It has a more detailed testing procedure for the testing the Hall Effect sensor and ignition module. It is much too long for me to describe here in this forum.

Good luck...

My vw golf 4 2.0l won't rave but idles roughly

check spark plugs and distributor. look for bad wear and missing parts. It must be a faulty spark plug which is not igniting fuel in one cylinder. If you decide to replace the plugs its best to change all of them.

Cant locate the spark plugs on vw golf 88 mk1..any ideas?

I'm assuming you have a petrol fuelled car, as diesels do not have spark plugs.

Find the distributor cap leading off the distributor - it should look a little like this: http://www.google.com/images?um=1&hl=en&safe=off&client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla:en-GB:official&biw=1920&bih=895&tbs=isch:1&aq=f&aqi=g8g-m1&oq=&q=distributor%20cap

there should be 5 leads trailing from the cap - the lead in the centre leads to the "coil", the other 4 leads go to the spark plugs. There should only be 4 as the Mk1 was only made as a 4 cylinder engine.

Pull off the leads (though not whilst the engine is running as you'll electrocute yourself) and the spark plugs will be revealed.

Engine cranks but wont start

This may be a result of no fuel or no spark. To test, remove a spark plug after turning the engine over for a few turns and smell it. If it smells like gas, it's a spark problem, if not you should check your fuel lines for leaks or your fuel pump. A quick way to test the fuel pump is to put the key in the ignition, turn it to "on" but don't try to start the car and listen for the pump to "prime" the system. It will sound like a low humm.

To check for spark, remove a plug and hold it against the engine block while someone tries to start the car (only turn the engine over once or twice while doing this!). If you are getting spark, you should see it. If you aren't, check the firing order, the distributor cap/coil packs, wires, and the plugs themselves.

I hope that helps and good luck!

The motor is 'swinging' when trying to start, but no spark?? There are new spark plugs. Recently after starting the motor, if you gave it petrol(accelerated) it would just die, but now it wont even start??...

If your VW don.t have spark - check Hall sensor located into distributor,if OK check ignition amplifier-located under a plastic cover top of wiper blade motor. This job is for qualified electrician
