Question about 1996 Toyota Corolla

1 Answer

Looking for the OBDll connector for a 1996 Toyota Corolla ll Windy Model with a1N-T, 1453 cc turbo diesel engine. Steering wheel is on the passenger side of the car. Need this info for a friend. He has looked everywhere you can think of and has not found the OBDll connector. There is a connector in the engine compartment near the brake master cylinder, however, that isn't the one he is looking for. I need a picture of where it is located!

He said he checked in the location that you are telling me the check, and found nothing. I'm just wondering if because it's a diesel engine, that it would make a difference?

  • chevy6699 Oct 05, 2010

Yes, there are red X's where the picture should be. He removed the plastic cover and send me a picture, it is a picture of the fuse box, and the OBDll connector is not there.

Look under the dash near where the steering wheel is usually located (on the driver's side).

Was this vehicle marketed in the U.S.?
1996-97 MODELS NOTE: These models require the use of the Toyota's hand held scan tool or an equivalent OBD II compliant scan tool.

  1. Prepare the scan tool according to the manufacturers instructions.
  2. Connect the OBD II scan tool, to the DLC3 under the instrument panel. The DLC3 on the 1996-97 models is located on the drivers side under the dash Looking for the OBDll connector - 88274pa2.jpg
NOTE: When the diagnosis system is switched from the normal mode to the check mode, it erases all Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC) and freeze frame data recorded. Before switching modes, always check the DTC and freeze frame data and write them down.
  3. Turn the ignition switch to the ON and switch the OBD II scan tool switch on.
  4. Use the OBD II scan tool to check the DTC and freeze frame data. Write them down.
  5. Compare the codes found to the applicable diagnostic code chart. If necessary, refer to the individual component tests in this section. If the component tests are OK, test the wire harness and connectors for shorts, opens and poor connections.

From communicating with him by email, it appears the car was manufactured in Japan.

I'm not familiar with the Japanese models from 1996 on up that were required to have an OBD-II connector for U.S. distribution.

Perhaps the vehicle didn't have one if one can't find it anywhere. I'm not sure about the Japanese counterparts to American cars.

It seems to me, that it should have one, though, since it's a useful feature for diagnosing problems with the vehicle.

If you posted pictures or diagrams, I'm not getting them!

I'm sorry, but the picture of the obd-II connector on the driver's side is located behind a door in the plastic dash that flips up.

Sometimes, pictures and diagrams do not copy and paste to the fixya.com site very well.

    Sorry, about that.

Do you see 'x's where the pictures or diagrams should be?

Sometimes the fixya.com site doesn't accept copy and pasted diagrams or pictures from my online resource. Sorry about that.

Replace steering wheel of toyota corolla 1990 model

The steering shaft has splines that allow the steering wheel to be positioned correctly with the front wheels.
Try tapping behind the streering wheel with a hammer to loosen so you can pull the steering wheel off.
If this does not work then you need a wheel puller to pull the steering wheel off the steering shaft.

Toyota Corolla, manual 1991, Squeaking sound when turn the steeri

This is normal for a 210K Toyota Corolla. What you are hearing is the sound made by the power steering pump. Check fluid level and fill as needed. Some noise in the instances you are mentioning is normal.

2009 Corolla steering problem

I had this "problem" but there wasn't anything wrong with the car - it was just my driving...
The steering is just sensitive and "sporty" - try driving with a much lighter hand - even one hand, lower on the wheel. I now find the steering great and its actually very responsive.
It took 3 visits to Toyota before someone finally explained this to me but it works. People kept explaining that it "drives like a Corolla" but couldn't tell me how to drive it better.
Mind you the car is still horrible on windy days but I don't have same issues in normal highway driving.
A year ago I was actually renting cars for road trips instead of driving my 09 Corolla S I was that freaked out about the steering but I'm now completely comfortable driving the car. I do have to warn everyone that drives my car on the highway though...they never believe me at first but always concede that I'm right and that a light hand makes a huge difference.

open the driver's side door and look on the side of the dash. If it's not there, check the passenger's side on the center console. If not there, check under the hood.
