Transmission light on. Rpm go to 3000 when I'm doing 55mph.it not going into 4th gear (overdrive) what's wrong with my truck?

It seems as though your electronic "lock up" on the torque converter is not actuating. TCC lockup/Torque Converter Clutch lockup.

As a test, you can switch the overdrive OFF with a push of a button. The engine will run at higher RPM so test it under 55MPH.

I am thinking about your comment of "One side shaking". This sounds more like a loose wheel or dragging out of round front rotor. Then when you comment about the vibration stopping briefly when accelerating or decelerating, that's a lot like U-joint play. The U-joint has play and tightens at the extreme edge of its mount as it rocks from Torque direction changes.

I would say to have an Alignment shop check the front suspension and driveshaft. These inspections are not something a beginner should do.

1994 shift only when overdrive is off.


first thing to check is transmission oil level and quality. If that is fine than your looking at either a valve body problem (valve body is what controls the selection of gears) or possibly a problem with the bands on the planetary gear set, they can be tightened in certain models. However i dont think it is the bands.
Does the overdrive only engage 4th gear? or does it feel like the gear ratios are different between overdrive and normal before the problem happened? some overdrive buttons engage final gear and some do as much as change gear ratios like in a cvt (contantly variable transmission) and some just change the timing in the gear changes to provide more rpm/power.
My best guess is that the valve controlling the overdrive in the valve body has failed and therefor you dont get a response from the transmission (i.e no gear shifting when overdrive is selected)

and drop that in

from the pictures i cant tell if its overdrive is under an external plate at the end of the gearbox
and repaired with an overdrive kit

I have a 2004 GMC 2500hd, 6.0, 4 speed auto trany w/ overdrive, 4.10 gears. When Im driving at 55mph my rpm is at 2000 and when in towing with tow haul on at 55 mph my rpm is at 3000. My motor gets hot and...


When the transmission is in "tow" mode, the converter is unlocked. That causes the engine to run at a higher RPM but also since it's actually slipping internally (by design), it builds heat. If your radiator is the least bit internally obstructed or if you don't have a large enough transmission cooler (mounted externally), or, a combination of both items, everything will get hotter than it should be. Heat is especially bad for your transmission. The fluid chemically breaks down resulting in clutch slippage and burning.
If you do a lot of hauling, I'd get the largest trans cooler available making sure it's attached to the return side of the one inside the radiator and also change the fluid to a good grade of synthetic (resists heat damage far better than conventional fluid). Even if you think it's clean, I'd also flush out the radiator just to make sure.

You are going to need to remove the transmission valve body. Check to make sure the valves all move in there bores. If one sticks remove it. Check using your finger nail if there is a scrach on it. If you fell your nail enter the scrach at all you will have to replace the valve body. This is not a D I Y If you screw it up then you might need a trans.

Sounds like my 1992 honda station wagon will not shift to 4th gear. It is idled at around 3000-3500 Rpms when I'm going over 55mph.


sounds like your right ! Do you have an overdrive switch on the side of the gear shift? If you do cycle it some once you believe that your susposed to be in high gear if you feel it shift then the tans can be slipping. if not the wires to the switch can be bad or the switch is fouled ( soada in it ) or something that has gotton into the wire harness of the transmission controller. The controller are quite good and the problem can be in the overdrive solioid and its not a doit yourselfer job. The fluid levels checked and topped up and the wires looked at to see that their all plugged up ( not fouled with oil ) and check engine light off and checked for stored codes

That is normal,If you do the same speed in 4th gear the rpm's will almost double.

The rpm's will repond faster in a manual than an automatic.

In a manual the engine supplies the power required directly to the gear that you have selected thus the engine rpm's will increase or decrease as needed.

There isn't anything wrong with your car. This is perfectly normal. I have a 2000 ES300 as well as other people that I know and it operates in the same way. Overdrive doesn't mean the same thing for every car or transmission. In our case overdrive is simply a reference to the top gear which is 4th gear. When you switch overdrive off(which is depressing the button causing the O/D OFF dash light to illuminate,) the highest gear becomes 3rd because you turned 4th gear or overdrive off. The application scenario for this is usually mountainous terrain where a lot of uphill driving makes it more feasible not to up shift into 4th gear while ascending and descending. It will not switch back to overdrive or 4th gear until you re-engage it by turning the overdrive back on or repressing the button. Again, when the O/D OFF dash light is illuminated, overdrive which is 4th gear is off and the highest gear will then become 3rd. It will never shift into 4th gear while this light is illuminated or overdrive is off. When you press the button and the O/D OFF dash light is NOT illuminated overdrive is on and therefore it will shift into 4th gear as usual. This applies to all 97-2001 ES300's and probably any other car you drive tat exhibits this same type of change when overdrive is turned off.

sounds like a stuck valve. I'm still new to transmission stuff so I could be wrong. he could probably get a transmission rebuild book and maybe just do it himself. it would be the cheapest unless you knows someone
