What gears are you talking about if it is the timing belt put the no 6 or no 4 piston on top dead center rockers are rocking and the mark on the harmonick balancer shows marks on top dead center and the over head cam has a mark on it to lines up with a mark on the timing cover mark.

Rear head cam marks


Hi There, Didn't see your name so it's difficult to be personal. Right mister Pimpernel, this is what we need to do. the timing belt synchronizes the cam shafts with the crank shaft. These must all run in synchronization so that the valves can open without hitting the pistons as the come up to Top Dead Center. This is what we need to do. Remove the timing belt and set the Crankshaft at TDC. You should then see a mark on the block (The front oil seal housing) which aligns with the mark on the timing gear. Make sure they are perfectly aligned! Next remove the camshaft caps and identify the alignment marks on both cams. Before proceeding further check to see if there is a spring loaded section on the camshafts If there is place the cams into a vise protecting them with strips cut from a rubber mat or something similar. Rotate the tension gear and lock it in position with a ten millimeter bolt. Look for the match marks on both cams and then align them so that when fitted they keep alignment. (At Top Dead Center the cam lobes of number one piston should be pointing away from the valve underneath. The stroke is at the end of compression and about to go to ignition. All valves for number one will be closed. The firing order is 1342, meaning that as number one is beginning the ignition stroke, number four will be on overlap, with the exhaust valves almost closed and the intake valves already beginning to open. The overlap is to make the expulsion of the exhaust gas more efficient and to help the induction of the explosive mixture of fuel and air. (Did you know the optimum mixture is fourteen and a half parts of air to one part of fuel?) There's a piece of useless information for you, but the rest isn't! Let me know how you get on. Need to know where the timing marks are on cam and cranck for 1991 oldsmobile sillouetechanging the timing chain.how do i line up the marks?


Finding the timing marks is simple, it is an impression (a small arrow) on both the crank and the cam. As for the exact time set, I would refer to the owner's manual but if you are doing it off the cuff pull the number one piston top dead center, line up the rotor button with the number one piston and set crank at top dead center and cam at bottom dead center. This will be a good starting point, but the owner's manual will give you more exact instructions.

How do I find the timing marks to time a 4-cyl 93 Caravan engine? I have the crank gear and camshaft gear already exposed and new belt already on. I need to know how to align it to the proper position.


The crankshaft gear has a center punch mark on gear and the intermediate gear has a line mark on gear. Rotate the crank until the #1 piston is top dead center. In doing so the crankshaft mark should line up with the intermediate gear mark. (crankshaft mark at 1 oclock and intermediate gear mark at 7 oclock). At the same time look at the cam gear and the small hole should be at the top and the two larger holes should align with the bearing cap. ((parting line should be looking at it will be 50/50 when you look at the front of cam gear). Remember to remove belt before timing engine correctly. Also make sure the negative wire is disconnected from battery before starting this job. Hope this will help you.

Timing chain guide broke..jumped time and broke middle gear.


remove the #1 sparkplug place a long screwdriver in the sparkplug hole point touching the top of the piston turn the crankshaft around until the screwdriver is almost pushed out (top dead center)
check to see that the distributor rotor is pointing at the #1 sparkplug wire it must be; if not: turn the crankshaft again until it does
then turn the camshaft around until both valves above the #1 piston cylinder are closed
this is correct; now find the marks on the belt camshaft sprocket gear and, crankshaft gear aline the belt marks with the gear marks and, install the belt

Need timing mark settings for 1995 Chevy Cavalier 4 cyl


there are two marks one on the cam gear and one on the crank gear. to line these gears up first no#1 cyclinder has to be on commpession stroke, and at top dead center . remove number one spark plug rotate mtr by bumping the starter with key. install commpession gauge hose in number one spark plug hole, when you bump the mtr and that cyclinder is on the compession stroke you will here the air escape from the hose. then rotate the mtr to top dead center by algining the the mark on crank pulley and pointer on the timing cover . cam mark is at 6 a clock postion and the crank mark is at 12 a clock postion. adjust as needed

set the timing marks on the crankshaft and the cam marks head to head the marks should be with the cylinder number 1 an tdc top dead center on the compression stroke then adjust the cam so the marks are aligned remember the number 1 piston has to be @ tdc and the crank and cam marks are lined up ok bye for now good luck with it
