Question about Nissan Altima

2 Answers

I took my car in for an oil change a few days ago. When it was returned to me, I discovered the key kept slipping out of the ignition. This has NEVER happened before. Went back to the car shop to inquire, and they claimed this was not their wrongdoing. Now, they are asking for $150+ to order a new ignition lock. Can you provide some insight into the issue?

If it's an older nissan vehicle, the key itself might be worn thin, causing it to slip out of the ignition. If that's the case, try a newer, less worn key to see if it slips out or just have a new key cut and it should hold in the ignition fine.

Try your spare key and if it continues to happen its the key, more than likely there isnt much they would be doing to the car that would involve using the key that many times to cause wear

examine the ignition lock for any evidence of wrong doing, if there is call the police and file a report then call your insurance and they will fix it for you

Car downshifts while driving

I had exactly the same problem. It would randomly downshift without warning even at highway speeds. Very Scary!!

After the independent garage couldn't figure it out I took it to the Chrysler dealer. First time through, they did a few things that I knew wouldn't fix it. Two days later I took it back after another scary downshift on the Interstate. They kept it two days.

Believe it or not, the problem turned out to be the ignition switch!!

That was over two years ago, and the problem has NOT re-occured, so they nailed it - and I'm grateful.

2002 impala, no crank

what makes you think someone tried to steal it? the security light issue is a very common problem with GM cars equipped with the Passlock II anti-theft system. just a few days ago my 2003 impala did the same thing in front of a 7-11. took me about 10-15 minuts to get it started. i just kept turning the key on, tried to crank it, and turned the key off numerous times. i had a 1999 malibu that did the same thing and i replaced the ignition cylinder and keys. that cost me about $160 but it solved the problem. changing it out is fairly simple. if thats the route you have to/ need to go i can walk you through it. unfortunately however, GM, although this is a very common occurance, will not issue a recall to fix the problem.

Oil light flashing, last oil change 7 wks ago

I belive they didn't reset the oil light timer. I belive the sequence is 1. key on (not acc with engine off)
2. step on the brake pedal 5 times within 10 seconds. 3. key off. 4. start car. 5. check if the light went out. you may have to try it a few times to get it.

Fans for radiator wont stop running

The lite came on because the computer saw that there was no power to the cooling fan curcuit. That is monitored by the computer. But to be sure you should have someone read the code for you. Or you can disconnect the battery and it will clear the code. If the lite comes back on the computer is still seeing a problem and you should have it check.
