Question about 2003 Mitsubishi Lancer

Engine Revs I have a 2003 Mitsubishi Lancer and when driving in traffic, the rpms start climbing...at one point I reached 3000 rpms when car is in neutral. This is starting to get dangerous when trying to break. Thoughts?

Don't know where you live but in areas where winter happens and humidity is high, corroded contacts under the hood are pretty common and can cause random problems such as you are describing.
These can often be cured by carefully pulling any visible connectors apart and replugging them several times.
If you see no deposits from a corrosion inhibiting grease, smearing the accessible contacts with petroleum jelly will afford some protection.
Also, a vacuum leak can confuse the computer. Sometimes caused by a cracked hose that can seal, then open up again, depending on the torque the engine is delivering; a small crack can be partially sealed by a subtle shift of the drive train.
Check all visible hoses for signs of ageing/cracking.

There are less expensive diagnostic readouts now that can be had for under $40 US that will let you read the error codes the computer has stored and I would bet that it has captured the problem.
The rectangular diagnostic connector for the device is generally located on the driver's side under the dash and may have a plastic cap fitted and not be immediately identifiable.

That condition is very dangerous as I'm sure you know and not one that should be simply put off.

Check engine comes in when engine starts to overheat, which it does in slow traffic. Radiator, fans, water pump are OK.


Did you check/replace the thermostat? Another possible cause may be hair line cracks in the head(s).

Idle erratic revs


idle control on the intake is at fault, the click you are hearing is that the unit is trying to keep the idle down. but it is eather blocked or warn out.

I have a 2008 mercury Milan with nearly 60k miles on it. When I come to a stop the rpm drops by 1000 then recovers quickly. What should I do to fix the problem? Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

FLUCTUATING IDLE ON 2003 LANCER.. ANY IDEA WHY? GOES UP AND DOWN OTHERWIZE RUNS GREAT.


i just fixed mine.. take out your idle air intake valve, clean it all out. mine had the same issue. foreinstance in neutral my rpms were higher then drive. nmpawel80@gmail.com

The engine rpm's increase when the engine gets warm.


spray a samll amount of either near each vacum line connection if the rpms go up theres your leak!!

I have a B3000 dual sport (2002) two wheel drive, standard. The problem I'm having is when I press in the clutch the revs go up to 3000 and stay there, and also when I'm stopped in traffic the revs will...


I'm not sure if it will solve anything, but try to get ur mass air flow sensor checked. That might cause it. That of like an idle control valve or Idle control sensor. whatever yours has.
