I had the same problem, it turned out that the float in my gas tank was so old that my gas gauge on the dash was inaccurate. so it only happened wen it was less than a quarter tank of gas on the gauge but really i was out of gas and the gauge was wrong

also if the "fuel cutout" light is on, go in the trunk on the passenger side, right under where the speaker is there is a little access door, this covers the fuel cut-out switch, push this in and see what happens to your light

cut off switch could still be bad. First my sure gas is getting to the engine....if so then this indicates that fuel system is working properly. Sounds like car may not be firering. Things that could cause this is coil bad, ingnition modual failed or maybe pickup coil."sensor maybe some where..timing out which would indicate timing belt or chain or gears are broke......Keep in mind these are just some things that could cause your problem and gives you ideal what to look for........hope this info helps and good luck....Please rate this post and if you need more help then fill free to contact me and we will try to get ya back on the road......

1994 Probe: wont start dash says fuel cutout...

There is a fuel cutout switch located in the trunk. It is often referred to as the inertial fuel cut, as it is designed to trigger in an accident. Sometimes it can trigger at other times, like moving things around in the trunk or a particularly violent pothole etc.

It is located on the wall of the spare tire well, in the bottom of the trunk, and should have a user-operated button or switch on the outside of the housing. Resetting this should fix your problem.

93 Ford Probe won't start, possible fuel pump?

Fuel filters are cheap (less than $20.00 for the premium filter at Napa) and easy. If you've never changed it, you should do it anyway. It would at least make sure that it's not the filter if the problem still exists. On the bonus, you've got a new fuel filter.

1997 2.2 Cavalier sporadic/cutting out

I had a similar problem with an earlier model Cavalier, with the problem being much more pronounced. The fuel injector nozzles on two cylinders turned out to be the culprits. Once replaced, the car ran beautifully like it always had before.
