Cooling fans not coming on before engine overheats and coolant is pumped out of the overflow.

    The fan itself works but it does not come on before the engine overheats. If the sensor is unplugged the fan will come on but the temperature gauge stops working. when the sensor is plugged in again the fan will run for a moment then the gauge will work again.

    it is not the water pump, fuses, relays, sensor or fan. We can make the fans kick on. The problem is they take too long to kick on, on there own and the engine gets hot enough for the coolant to flow out the overflow. How do we get the fan to turn on sooner?

    As crazy as it sounds, we replaced the cap on the coolant tank and now the fan comes on before it overheats. We just ran it for almost an hour and the fan kicked on when it should and went off again as it cooled off. It may not make sense but it worked.

2 things of what it might be........an airlock, caused by improper bleeding of the sytem, when it is topped up...or coolant temp snesor, has failed or poor wiring......

There is a relay under the hood on the driver side that controls the fans. Sometimes the ECU goes bad and does send power to the relay. The way that you can check the ECU is to take the relay out and check for power when the fans should be running. If you have power, then the relay is bad.

The solenoid of the cooling fan is not working. Initially, check the wiring to it and if found OK then replace the solenoid.

Hi. Check the relay switch or fuse. Fans should automatically kick in when engine reached to its heat threshold. You may want to checked also your wwater pump since coolant is being pumped out to the overflow.

If your electric fan(s) is not coming on when the engine is hot, first check the fuse, usually in the fusebox under the hood. Then, with the engine hot and running, pull out the fan relay (usually in the same box as the fuse). If it's working, it should click when removed and again when replaced in its socket. If it doesn't, suspect the relay or sensor has failed. See my note here on how to troubleshoot the relay socket: http://www.fixya.com/cars/r6022358-relay_check. If your gage runs off the same sensor and works, it's probably fine. If you're good with electronics, you can also test the sensor. If these are all good, either the wire to the fan is bad or the fan itself is bad. You can test the wire for voltage with a test light hooked to the fan connector, and you can test the fan by hotwiring it to the battery.

What cause of overheat from engine


an engine will overheat if the rad cooling fan is not working, this will have to be check to see if its the fan motor, the fan relay. low coolant level, top up coolant check for leaks. could be head gasket problem, bad water pump(impeller worn).

first check coolant level in radiator coolant level sound low.if coolant overflow jug empty.coolant sysyem low, when add coolant to coolant overflow jug coolant level should stay at full cold mark.if coolant level okay,engine overheat while sitting or moving in slow traffic either coolant fan relay or fuse could be bad.or engine coolant temperature sensor could be bad. coolant sensor turn on cooling fan at certain temperature.hot wire check to make sure cooling fan motor not bad or short in wires.if all is good have pcm check it controls fan relay to through the coolant temperature sensor signal when coolant get hot.

Engine overheating i have replaced the radiator has plenty of water


replace thermostat.then bleed coolant system, this is how you do it.fill the cooling coolant system with 50 / 50 dexcool and water to raise boiling point,straight water will evaporate boil away cause engine to overheat catch fire thats why you need 50 / 50 mixture antifreeze and water.to bleed coolant system first fill coolant system until coolant stay at the full cold mark on the the coolant overflow jug,then you start engine allow it to idle,place the heater and ac control in any ac setting except max and the temperature control to the highest setting,run engine until lower hose to water pump is hot. with the engine hot run the engine speed up to 3000 rpm and allow it return to idle, repeat this 5 times. slowly open the bleed valve on the thermostat housing or look for bleed valve at the water pump heater hose.open bleed valve for 15 seconds to expel any trapped air.then top off the coolant as necessary,and when top radiator hose hot thermostat open up.keep adding cooling to overflow until coolant level stop at full cold mark dont over fill coolant.if engine seem like overheating while looking at cooling gauge turn off engine wait a while until cool off add more coolant until coolant level stay stable and dont drop any.when open radiator overflow cap use large rag over the radiator cap to keep from getting scald open radiator cap a little at a time but dont open radiator cap until engine cool down first.replace the radiator overflow cap, thermostat,and engine coolant temperature sensor and check the cooling fans fuses and relays see what happens.

It's usually the thermostat, I woud pressure test the cap. It may need to be flushed. Are the fans working? Is there a 50/50 mix of anti-freeze

CAR OVERHEATING FIRST CHECK FOR LOW COOLANT IN THE RADIATOR COOLANT OVERFLOW JUG.IF COOLANT LEVEL IN OVERFLOW JUG LOW REFILL ADD COOLANT BACK TO THE FULL COLD MARK.PUT RADAITOR CAP ON COOLANT OVERFLOW JUG START ENGINE LET IT IDLE UNTIL IT OPERATING TEMPERATURE.MAKE SURE TOP RADIATOR HOSE GETTING HOT WHILE ENGINE WARM UP.IF TOP RADIATOR HOSE DONT GET HOT WHILE ENGINE IDLING YOUR THERMOSTAT COULD BE STUCK CLOSE CAUSING CAR TO OVERHEAT.IF TOP HOSE IS GETTING HOT.CHECK FOR COOLANT LEAKS CHECK TOP RADIATOR HOSE AND BOTTOM RADIATOR HOSE FOR LEAKS.CHECK FOR LEAKS AT THE RADIATOR CORES AND PLASTIC SIDE CONTAINERS.IF ALL IS GOOD ENGINE OVERHEATING WHILE IN A LONG TRAFFIC LINE, COOLANT FANS NOT COMING ON.COULD HAVE FAULTY ENGINE COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR OR BLOWN COOLING FAN FUSE OR RELAY.COULD HAVE PCM FAULT.MAKE COOLING FAN ELECTRICAL CONNECTORS AND WIRING NOT DAMAGE OR BROKEN.

1997 polo overheats even after removing thermostat


On a water cooled engine... the impeller on the water pump is no longer working correctly. It has probably come loose from the input shaft and is no longer pumping water. You can prove this on a warm engine by filling the radiator to the top and then accelerating / decelerating the engine... if you don't get a change in the water level the water pump is shot.

The reservoir,and,or,the tubing from the radiator,to the reservoir may have a pin hole in it,or the tubing is sucking together.Replace the tubing,and the radiator cap,and the reservoir top.See if it will work correctly.Fill reservoir,and radiator,and let it run until the cooling fans cut on,then cut the engine off.Wait about 25 minutes,and see if the reservoir will drop in level,if so,repeat this process until the vehicles cooling system is normal.Make sure the cooling fans are coming on,and going off,with the ac off.If the cooling fans are coming on,then that is good,but,they must go off by them selves,or the cooling system is not cooling down.
