The most frequent cause of this problem is your speedometer cable is binding inside its casing. Replace the speedometer cable. After you replace the cable and you are still having a problem then the next option would be to replace your instrument cluster. Click on the links below view:

You are having an electrical problem. Any time something electrical stops working "randomly", it means only one thing: FAULTY CONTACT!.

You have to pinpoint where is this faulty contact. Can be at any contact point. I would suspect faulty contact at sending unit at transmission. This is the most likely to get dirty and/or loose.

I honestly don't think the instrument panel is bad. This are solid state devices. It either works fine or it doesn't. No random behavior to blame here.

Check the connection on the speed sensor first(on gearbox) and or replace it.

The most common problem is a loose connection or
moisture in the connection at the speed sensor on the transaxle. the
next thing that I have seen is a worn speedo driven gear on the sensor
itself. Provided the gear isn't when due to worn diff side bearings not a
real complicated job or excessively costly. An experienced Hyundai tech
would find the problem pretty quickly.

I took my Santa Fe's sister back to the dealer and told them to keep it until they found and fixed the problem. It only took one day for them to see the problem. At first, they said it was the speedometer gear (in the speedometer) and they replaced it. When they took the vehicle out to test the "fix", the speedometer failed two more times. This time they replaced the sensor in the transaxle (which I and several of you suggested was the problem). That did the trick - it has worked ever since. Apparently they have an inherent problem with the early Santa Fe speed sensors, but for some reason, don't want to notify their customers to come in and have the sensors replaced.

Go to Auto Zone for a FREE scan of your vehicles computer. It sounds like the vehicle speed sensor control (VSS) for your trans is bad. They will find out exacxtly what the problem is if so. The VSS is linked to your computer for the cruise as well

Did the 'Check Engine' Light come ON? Whenever the 'CHECK ENGINE' light comes on, the ECU (Engine Control Unit) sets a Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC). These codes identify the particular engine management system which caused the light to come on. You'll need to use/find an OBDII (On-Board Diagnostic) Scanner to retrieve any code which have been stored in the ECU computer. Afterward, we might be able to help you DIAGNOSE and perhaps eventually fix the problem.

My speedometer drops to zero or jumps erratically plus cruise control stops. This only happens occasionally when at highway speeds. Rarely in town.

sounds like a bad speedo drive gear or speed sensor mounted on the rear of the trans there is no speedo cable, its electronic its not expensive take it to the dealer they will know exactly whats wrong with it

When driving, Speedodometer drops to zero.

I thought this year of Santa Fe had a 100k Warranty? If so, take it to the dealer and get it fixed. Even if it's not under warranty, take it and get it fixed! This is dangerous to use with the cruise control!! Do not use the Cruise Control until you get this fixed. It sounds like a bad speedomoter sensor, and that is confusing the Cruise Control. Either your speedometer is going to stop working altogether, or your going to RAM someone from behind going at a DANGEROUS rate of speed. Take it and get it fixed, and do not use the Cruise Control until it is fixed.
