Pull wheel and drum then pull back cover. Then find the eight mm bolt on the carrier pull that out then the pin it holds in. Now push the axle in to access the c clip that holds the axle in and pull axle out.

Trying to get the rear axle off a 1997 chevy blazer 4x4

You have to remove the cross shaft that runs between the axles. To do this find the retaining bolt at one end of the cross shaft, it should have a 5/16 or 8mm head on it, and remove it. After that push the cross shaft a little way out of the carrier, then roll the carrier 180 degrees grab the shaft and pull it out. Then after removing the tires and brake drums, push in on the axles and the c-clip will normally fall free, if it doesent you should be able to tap it with your finger and get it to fall out.

I need to remove my rear axle shaft

These rear ends don't use c-clips on the axle shafts to remove the axles.

It must be done by removing the axle at the backing plate area.

Have you checked the U-joints in the rear drive shaft? Also did this happen before the tires were replaced? Take the truck back to where you got the tires and have them check the balance, they should do this for free.

Rear axle removal

Remove wheel, remove rear diff cover, remove small bolt that retains spider gear cross shaft in the carrier. Push axle in, remove "c" clip on end of axle and remove axle from housing. Reverse to replace. Only problem you may have is that sometimes small bolt is broken inside carrier. if broken you will need to drill a tiny hole into it and remove with tiny "easy out" or other similar device.
Do not turn carrier when shaft has been removed or spider gears will rotate and fall out!
