SOURCE: 1998 Ford Explorer sport 4.0L 4x2 PCV Valve Location

the pcv is located on the rear(firewall) of the drivers side valve cover.turn counterclockwise and pull to remove be careful there are 2 small tabs inside the pcv hole in the valve cover(can feel with small finger) this is to hold valve in place so it wont leak.if you have a oil leak at the pcv a quick fix is to put a small amount of silicone around the pcv o-ring and install.wait hours for silicone to set up.

  1. Remove the engine front cover. For additional information, refer to Engine Front Cover in this section.
  1. Remove the crankshaft sensor ring from the crankshaft.

  1. Rotate the crankshaft until the timing mark on the RH camshaft sprocket is approximately at the 11 o'clock position and the timing mark on the LH camshaft sprocket is approximately at the 12 o'clock position.

  1. Using the special tool, position the crankshaft as shown.

  1. Install the special tool.

  1. NOTE: LH shown; RH similar.
    Remove the two bolts, the timing chain tensioner and tensioner arm.

  1. Remove the LH and RH timing chains and the crankshaft sprockets.
    • Remove the special tool from the crankshaft.
    • Remove the timing chains from the camshaft sprockets.
    • Remove the right and left timing chains and the crankshaft sprocket from the crankshaft.

    Remove the bolts and the timing chain guides.

Installation
  1. ani_caut.gif CAUTION: Timing chain procedures must be followed exactly or damage to valves and pistons will result.

    Compress the tensioner plunger, using an edge of a vise.

  1. NOTE: There are 61 links in the timing chain.
    If the copper links are not visible, mark two links on one end and one link on the other end, and use as timing marks.

    • Remove the special tool.

  1. NOTE: Crankshaft sprockets are identical. They can only be installed one way. Refer to the following illustration for correct crankshaft sprocket installation.
    If removed, install LH and RH crankshaft sprockets.

  1. Install the LH timing chain onto the crankshaft sprocket, aligning the one copper (marked) link on the timing chain with the slot on the crankshaft sprocket.

  1. Position the LH timing chain on the camshaft sprocket with the two copper (marked) chain links and the camshaft sprocket timing mark aligned.

SOURCE: there is a ticking noise that won't quit. I've

3 chains ONLY (1 chain from the crank to idler sprocket/ 2 from idler sprocket to cams). This ticking noise are usually associated with poor oil flow through the upper part of the engine or sticking lifters. If this vehicle has over 80k miles, have the oil pan and oil pick-screen cleaned!! If the problems not severe yet, it will go away!!

97 ford exporer timing issue


There are three engines used in a 97 model. The 4.0 single overhead cam V6 engine uses a timing chain in the front and in the rear, one for each cam. The left side is in the front and the right side is in the back. You would have to take the engine out to access the rear chain.
The 4.0 overhead valve engine and the V8 engine only have one chain in the front.

I dont think there is any "Recall", just updated parts, Its going to be expensive. ifyou are going to keep it for another few years, do it now, if not, sell it ASAP. .

I have a Ford Explorer 1999. I have been told timing chain gards need replacing which are plastic. The motor need to come out to do front and back at $7,000 AUS.


Yes Ford Explorers are like that, The timing chain tensioners are plastic and need replaced with the chains. The engine has to be removed, please replace all chains and related parts at this time. This will save you money and downtime later. There are multiple chains on these Fords.

not true. SOHC 4.0 tensioner and rails fall apart, allowing the chain to slap and do damage, or even break. book it. in order to replace rioght side cam chain and tensioner, the engine MUST BE REMOVED! if it has balance shaft chain in oil pan, there are a total of four chains in this engine.

Absolutely NOT TRUE this vehicle has a timing chain, NOT a timing belt. It has a serpentine belt. Thanks for using FIX YA

No engine available in any Ford Explorer uses a timing belt. The cams in all avaiable engines are driven by a chain, this chain has no specific time or mileage recommendation for replacement and in most cases lasts the life of the truck.

There is a detailed explanation in the ford workshop manual for this, and some special tools are required to get the timing right. I would not recommend doing this without the special tools. Contact your local ford dealer, they might loan you the tools and the manual for a fee.

How to set timing chain for 1997 ford explore


The best way to do that outside of having your own personal mechanic is to purchase a repair manual from Auto Zone or some other parts retailer. They have step by step repair instructions with photos based on a complete teardown and rebuild of your car. I have used Haynes Repair Manuals and they are around $20-25 each. Best investment for a used car owner.
