Is this A/C or entire climate control problem? I have a 97, too, and took out my climate control unit and found debris and spilled liquid on the unit! Liquids play havoc on electrical connectors. Make sure all connectors are clean and thoroughly connected to housings. Check the harness for breaks in wiring. Could have a short someplace. Heat and/or too much current could possibly cause immediate stoppage. Never forget simplest method..... check the fuses both inside car and under hood. If it's A/C as the problem, check R134 level at certified mechanic. Don't run A/C with low coolant - could burn up compressor. Let me know how it goes!

1997 Subaru Legacy Outback Limited. Why am I going through so many alternators.

Question edited for clarity.
Question moved to model category.

That is pretty crazy. It would be cheaper to get an auto electrician for an hour than to keep buying alternators. If a fuse melts, you have to find the reason why before replacing it. Jimmy rigging electrics just passes the problem along to another component. A Professional Grade Scan tool computer can diagnose in 20 minutes. They cost $3.5k to $5k!

97 Subaru legacy won't start and locks do not work. Battery is good and all fuses are fine.

take your ground wire off the battery and clean it with a wire brush it sounds like a ground problem

1991 Subaru Legacy 2.2L not Turbo "Idle" very

i would check the idle air control solenoid first. simply unplug it then remove the unit and inspect the air passage for any blockage and carbon buildup. Clean it if its dirty then test it out. If the IAC is good then you should look at the throttle position sensor.

How do i bleed my power steering rack on subaru legacy rs turbo

if its been a week, there should no tbe any air. if its heavy, the rack could be bad, or weak pump????? any noises? air will usually cause a whiney noise, and there will be air whipped, foamy fluid in the pump. A pump pressure regulator could be stuck open, not allowing full pressure? I would have a shop diagnose it, tell them the history and see if they can find a cause.

97 outback legacy; won't start

not sure if this will help, but I recently changed the engine in my subaru and changed battery + starter also. Would start but then not restart once warmed up. Turns out the engine ground got forgotten, had that hooked back up after banging my head on a wall for a week and it runs like new
