Question about 1998 Ford Escort
Hopefully I can be of more assistance than the last idiot ; )
If everything else is fine in your electrical system i.e. lights, indicators, signs of electrical activity then there may be a problem with your starter relay (not solenoid) The starter relay is slightly bigger than the other relays and 2 of the wires will be 2-3 larger in circumference than the others. The 2 smaller wires of the relay operate the coil. Listen for a click when you turn your key, if you can hear the click the problem may lie in either the contacts of the relay, the wiring to and from the relay (big wires) or the starter solenoid which is located on top of the starter motor. If you can't hear the click of the starter relay then the ignition switch, wires to and from the coil of the relay or the relay itself could be at fault. If you can locate the relay, remove it and look at the conector points where it was conected. You may see to thick wires (as above) going into the socket where the relay was before removal. Ensuring you have the right pins, take a piece of wire and bridge the two points in the socket. This completes the circuit directly to the solenoid. If it starts to turn over the solenoidand accompanying cables are fine if it doesn't they are not. Hope this helps.
