Oil pressure problem, change the switch and recheck, run a flush through the engine or some diesel, for no longer than 10 mins, no more than 700ml of diesel. refresh the engine oil/and oil filter and recheck. if no good still you may have to have the sump removed and the oil pick up unblocked. when off you should see signs of the flush working and solid bits of carbon and old oil in the sump.

I usually ask people with this problem how long they plan to keep the car. If it doesn't get worse, you can keep driving like this. If you want to keep the car a long time, then read on.

It could be the sensor or the pump or a clogged strainer. Of these, the sensor is by far the cheapest repair. Put a new sensor in and see if that fixes it. If not, now you have to take the oil pan off to make sure the strainer isn't clogged. If it is, clean and reinstall the oil pan. If it isn't replace the oil pump and then reinstall the oil pan. High temp low oil pressure light comes on after driving for a few minutes, then off when engine at driving rpm. At stop light (idle or low rpm) light comes back on. Normal driving it goes out.


You need to find out why you have low oil pressure. It is normal that as engine rpm's increase, the oil pressure will rise- the oil pump is moving oil faster. Even though your light goes out, you could still have critically low oil pressure. There should be sufficient pressure at idle to keep the light off. The light will come on when your oil pressure is almost nil- I believe for some it's as low as 8 psi. Normally, oil pressure at idle is specified anywhere from 15 to 40 psi. You would have to check specifications for your Expedition. To verify oil pressure, hook up a mechanical gauge at the oil pressure sending unit on the engine block. Check with a local shop.

The causes run from easy, simple to budget busting ruin. Low oil level, wrong grade oil, real old oil, oil leaks, internal oil leaks, worn oil pump, worn crankshaft bearings. It was pretty common on older very high mileage cars to have a fluttering oil light at stops and idle. It was time for a rebuild, or time to look for another car.

00 lincon navigator 5.4 oil pressure drop's low and light comes on , engine idles rough when pressure drops ,then pressure return s to normal range ,light goes out ,engine runs perfect. Is it my oil


Sounds more like an engine idle issue than a oil pressure issue. If the engine idle drops too low, the oil pump cannot provide sufficient oil pressure. If there is no oil light when the engine is idling normally, then there is no problem there.

My car starts hesitates the engine vibrates oil light comes on then sputters and cuts off


run the fault codes . Check for idle speed sensor and MAF sensor. It should be idling around 900rpm and the oil light coming on ( assuming you have enough oil in the sump) will be because of the very low idle rpm not pumping enough oil to maintain pressure.

More than likely, It might be worth giving the oil system a flush out. If the engine hasn't been properly maintained, sludge can build up in the oilways which can restrict oil flow at low pressure.

Oil light comes on when idling oil level is good


faulty oil pressure switch (cheap), worn oil pump (not pumping enough oil at low revs) but most likely worn shells or crankshaft (allows oil to pass too quickly lowering oil pressure - just not noticable when the engine is reving 'cos there's a lot more oil bieng shifted by the pump)

its a high mileage engine.
all you need to do is use a thicker oil and the light will go out at idle speeds.

use a 50w sae valvoline racing oil.
plus stp oil treatment.

do that and that light is all gone.

My 1999 pontiac grand am will idle low, but does not cut off.


Sounds like your oil pressure sensor may be faulty. Or your oil level is very low. Your engine should idle as low as 650 rpm without your light coming on.
