Question about 1999 Mercury Cougar

1 Answer

ABS light/not starting

My 1999 Mercury Cougar had a problem starting. After it finally kicked over, the ABS light appeared and stayed on, and the power windows, radio, and air conditioning were running abnormal (air was weak, windows were very slow, radio kept shutting off and on). Later on, I tried to start it again and it hesistated but started, and the same issues occurred with the lights and power, etc. I left the car running for 2 minutes while I ran in the house and when I came outside it had stalled, but the clock and power were still working when I turned the key. When I turned it further to start the engine it just made a very loud clicking noise and wouldn't turn over. I left it parked, and I was able to turn the key once and put the windows up, the ABS light still on. I also have had a problem with the front left rotor but haven't had it fixed yet. It has been making a weird off and on grinding/horn-like sound, and has gotten louder since it started. The worst is when it rains. Could that have something to do with it? And also, if it is the braking system, why would my car stall? Please help!!

I would jumpstart the car and let it run for 15 minutes. If it doesent stay running the altenator is bad--if it stays running and the next morning it doesnt start the battery is bad.

I have a 1999 mercury cougar v6 2.5l and says that #5 cylinder misfires. When you go above 30mph to highway speed it starts to buck and kick. Check engine light also flashes and then stays on completely....

Sounds like its the #5 cylinder injector. But if you have to change it you better change 1-5 also. Because it will happen to the rest of them.

I have a 1999 mercury cougar, says that the #5 cylinder is misfiring and any speeds above 30mph or highway speed, it starts to kick and buck. Check engine light also blinks and then shows up...

Maybe but I believe you have a dirty or bad injector-
you need to pull the engine codes for the engine light to see what it says. Any auto parts place will do that for you for free.

1999 cougar cranks but will not start no spark and check engine light comes on with key and stays on while cranking

Engine light will stay on until the engine starts. Its a self test of the system. As far as it not starting it sounds like the ignition modual in the distributor has gone bad. (common in 90's) Also the control modual on the drivers side fenderwell is also known to burn out. Both control spark.

I replaced the brake pads on my 1999 mercury cougar, but the brake pad warning light stays on. how is this light reset?

To reset the light, turn the key to position two and have the drivers door open for about 40 seconds, the light should automatically go off.. good luck.

1999 mercury cougar. won't start...cranks...battery ok.

V6 ? 4CYL? Have you verified SPARK? Did anyone check the "fuel pump inertia switch?" Its in the right front kick panel. If it was a "Anti-theft Issue" the light would be on or flashing.
