Question about 1998 Dodge Durango

1 Answer

Started truck went about 1/4 mile and it stalled - would not restart. Mechanic said that for some reason the spark plugs were not getting the current to fire. He said the coil is getting current - and he has changed out 2 sensors. The truck has been in the shop since Friday. Today they had a mechanic from the Dodge dealership in for a consult. Still, no solution!

Motor shuts off when started up,shuts off when driving.

hot engine or cold, or both? 180F+ is hot.
Shuts off, idling or on the fly, say at 30mph right foot down it dies?
just clue here...
engine stalls. is complex. but in the macro its below, using tools finds the reason,, but you never said did it restart easy./??????
1: lost of engine compression hot engine, (or overheated)
2: lost 12vdc electric power at stall (caused it) dash goes dead. ?
3: lost spark, test spark at the failure point. if dead trouble shoot speak.
4 bad fueling, too lean (say the fuel pump dies) or too rich.
too rich causes wet spark plug tips. (lots of causes )
5: stalls due to idle RPM too low, below 800 is too low.
too low idle rpm is caused by many things, but top 2 are.
A: EGR stuck wide open, clean it, as the books shows at 60k miles
B: ISC stuck closed. (same deal clean it)

now repost and say when it stalled,
at a read light or flying up a hill wot, wot= wide open throttle.
and when it dies, is the restart easy or hard.

I was driving down the road and lost power..no gas..no brakes...no steering.

did it restart?
the engine stalled, as such you
get
no engine power
no P/S reverts to manual steering, you did not loose steering.
same with P/B power brakes, you didnt lose it you lost power
assist, brakes will stop just as vast but takes a husky foot.
in school (driving) we were though to drive, stalled engine.
i guess most school went dumb. (seen it)
now stalls
engine stall for a vast number or reasons.

do that tuneup not called the 60k mile service point list. did you.?
cars ignored all fail, no car runs 300k miles service free,
skip them and get stranded, (i promise)

1: lost electric power to the EFI system.
2: engine overheated or lost compression for any reasons (complex)
3: lost spark
4: lost fuel
5: too much fuel, flooding, and stalling.
6: egr sticks open.
7: ISC sticks closed.
8:if not restart, say so and list expands way more...

cars are complex, it's not like a burned out desk lamp.
vast complexity and after 2007 , insane complexity.
avoid them 2007 and newer, sans NASA engineer.

I started having a problem about a month ago. My 2003 Mercury Grand marquis LSE tuned up at 100k currently 145k. started hesitating and slight bucking at cruise speed. I went to autozone and coded #8...

A misfire can be related to a number of causes. Since the coil and spark plug were replaced and it did not solve this issue, it is most likely related to the circuit for the number 8 cylinder. A thorough inspection of the electrical circuit is what is required next. Also, engine compression will need to be tested on that cylinder as well as cylinder number 6 that is next to it. Vacuum leak around the intake port of the number 8 cylinder could also be a cause and will need to be checked.

Truck started like normal went 1/4 of mile and just quit. well not restart 1999 1500 silverado 4.3 with 119,000 mile got it home and will not restart?

Two things come to mind hear with as much info as you have given, either the fuel pump went out witch they do just like that or it lost spark. I don't know if you got it started to get it home or you had it towed, what ever best to do a fuel pressure test, at the very least you can eliminate that as the problem and you can go on to the other thing, the spark that is a simple chk. unhook a plug wire plug in a old spark plug and ground it and turn it over and see if there is spark.
