If you have an O2 Sensor, that is not an exact copy of the one your replacing,take it back.

Oxygen sensors monitor the exhaust stream, comparing the oxygen content in it to the oxygen content of ambient air. When oxygen content is low, sensor voltage is high. When oxygen content is high, sensor voltage is low. The voltage created by the sensor is sent to the DME (engine control module) to help maintain a proper fuel mixture. The mixture preparation is used to keep the catalytic converters running at peak efficiency. The oxygen sensors used in E60 models covered in this article has four wires. Two of which are for oxygen sensor heating and two for the signal. The heater is used to get the sensor online faster. Previously, exhaust heat was used. One wire supplied a ground to the sensor for the signal, and the other was for the sensor signal.
Oxygen sensors should be replaced every 100,000 miles. In a perfect world that would be it. Wait until a specified mileage and replace the sensor. However, these sensors fail prematurely, set oxygen sensor fault codes and reduce fuel economy. In this article, I will show you how to identify the location of all four oxygen sensors and how to replace them. You will need an oxygen sensor socket to remove the sensors and remember to always work with a cool exhaust. Oxygen sensors are fragile. Do not drop, as damage may occur. Also, keep the sensor tip clean when reinstalling.
Oxygen sensors are laid out in banks, which refer to cylinders and in sensor numbers referring to before or after the catalytic converter. Bank1 or B1 refers to cylinders 1-3. Bank 2 or B2 refers to cylinders 4-6. Sensor 1 or S1 refers to the sensor before the catalytic converter. Sensor 2 or S2 refers to the sensor after the catalytic converter.
Remember that your car may have been serviced before and parts replaced with different size fasteners used in the replacement. The sizes of the nuts and bolts we give may be different from what you have so be prepared with different size sockets and wrenches.
Protect your eyes, hands and body from fluids, dust and debris while working on your vehicle. If working with the electrical system, disconnect the battery before beginning. Always catch fluids in appropriate containers and properly dispose of any fluid waste. Recycle parts, packaging and fluids when possible. Never work on your vehicle if you feel the task is beyond your ability.

Lack of HO2S-11 Switch, Sensor Indicates Rich A HEGO sensor indicating rich at the end of a test is trying to correct for an over-lean condition. The test fails when the fuel control system no longer detects switching for a calibrated amount of time. I would change both of the upstream (before the catalytic converter) O2 sensors (cylinder bank 0ne and two). 9 times out of ten this is the right guess to fix this code.

This is Oxygen sensor circuit has no activity Bank 1 sensor 3 That means the computer sees no change from bias voltage (451mv) to a plus voltage (451mv-890mv) and a drop voltage (359mv-100mv) best describe as a open circuit must test at computer pin to determine open in wiring.

The codes im gettin are oxygen sensors 1,2 an 1000 revolution an cylinder misfire. change out both oxygen sensors an ignition coil an spark plugs an wires. im still gettin same codes.


when you get tird of replacing parts and guessing, get the vehicle hooked to a real time scanner ot a code scanner, someone with experience reading sensors can tell youwhere to start diagnosing, my guess so far is an intake or fuel problem, could be a vavuum leak bad injector or something of the sorts, realtime will give you readings on sensors and actuators that may not set a code themselves but reflect on another sensor, otherwise its a guessing game and a waste of money

How to repair po420 code on a 2002 toyota sienna


The P0420 code is Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 1) error.
A code P0420 may mean that one or more of the following has happened:
  • Leaded fuel was used where unleaded was called for
  • An oxygen sensor is not reading (functioning) properly
  • The engine coolant temperature sensor is not working properly
  • Damaged or leaking exhaust manifold / catalytic converter / exhaust pipe
  • Retarded spark timing
  • The oxygen sensors in front and behind the converter are reporting too similar of readings
Some suggested steps for troubleshooting a P0420 code include:
  • Check for exhaust leaks at the manifold, pipes, catalytic converter. Repair as required.
  • Use a scope to diagnose the oxygen sensor operation (Tip: The oxygen sensor in front of the catalytic converter normally has a fluctuating waveform. The waveform of the sensor behind the converter should be more steady).
  • Inspect the downstream heated oxygen sensor (HO2), replace if necessary
  • Replace the catalytic converter
One thing to note is that many vehicle manufacturers
offer a longer warranty on emissions-related parts. So if you have a newer car but it's out of it's bumper-to-bumper warranty, there still may be warranty on this type of problem. Many manufacturers give a five year, unlimited mileage warranty on these items. It's worth checking into.
