I was given my grandfathers 1986 f250 4x4 w/6.9 liter international motor. The problem is, after i had it a month or so the glow plug light inside the truck stopped coming on. so now it is hard to start. I'm not familiar with desiels and I'm learning as i go. What can the problem be?. I need to get this fixed before winter hits. Thanks

Check the Relay first, mounted on the fender. Make sure it has power to it, and make sure the wires are all hooked up to it. It will look like this--->I was given my grandfathers - f9e02cc.jpg

Then if that's all working properly, you need to look on the engine for the Glow Plug Controller - It should look something like this--->c79cc4e.jpg

If the relay has power going to it, then I would suspect the Glow Plug Controller - You will have to test them both, because your looking at paying $120 to $200 for just that Controller.

The solenoid click sounds very strong, implying that you have a charged battery and the ignition circuit is functioning out to the solenoid. Suspect an issue with the starter motor. Is the starter motor installed and connected properly?

Check for battery to motor ground and battery to body ground for corrosion under mounting bolts. also check motor to body ground strap for corossion and overall condition. Bad ground can cause all sorts of problems. Also check all electrical connectors to glow plugs for corossion.

My 1986 f350 6.9s glow plug system does not work at all.the light in the dash that comes on when the glo plugs are warming up does not light up at all, what does this sound like?

Glow plug setups usually have a relay to handle the high current required to power the glow plugs. This relay could be faulty, preventing operation. It may be possible to swap a relay from another circuit to isolate the problem.

F250 Diesel will not start cold . Has power to glow plugs for short time ,but will not start 1986 modle.

Hello philkatkiele: My name is Roger and I will help you. First thing you need to check is the glow plugs. They will need tested individually. Un plug all 8 glow plugs. Take a test light and hook end to the positive battery cable. Touch opposite end of test light to the terminal end of the glow plug. The test light should light. Touch all 8 glow plugs. Ant that do not light are bad and will need replaced. If glow plugs are burnt out then the controller will flash wait light to early or very fast. The wait light should be on for approximately 10 seconds. If al glow plugs check ok then I would suspect the glow plug controller as the problem. Also if the temperature out side is below 40 degrees the truck should be plugged in. This will help to make the engine start easier. Should you need further help please just ask. Please rate the answer as this way I know it was helpful. Thank You for using Fix Ya. Roger

How do you change the glow plugs and relay in a F350 1997

Hello, here is the proceedure. Any questions please ask. Good luck. CAUTION The red-striped wires on the 1994-96 DI Turbo engine carry 115 volts DC. A severe electrical shock may be given. Do not pierce the wires.
  1. Make sure the ignition switch is OFF.
  2. For 1994-96 engines, remove the valve cover.
  3. Disconnect the wire connector from the glow plug.
  4. Using a 10mm deep socket, with enough clearance as to not break or bend the wiring connector, unscrew the glow plug from the manifold.
To install:
  1. Place anti-seize on the threads of the glow plug and screw it into the manifold.
  2. Tighten the glow plug to 12 ft. lbs. (16 Nm).
  3. Plug the wiring connector.
  4. Connect the negative battery cable.
  5. For 1994-96 engines, install the valve cover.
