Question about Porsche 924

Hey i have a 1979 porsche 924 it is a nonturbo car. it will crank over like a normal car should. i have tested the compression on all cylinders it was at 180 on the first three and 145 on the back cylinder. i also checked the spark it does and the fuel pump is getting fuel to the injectors. it will crank but it doesn't even act like it wants to start it has 74,000 miles. i have also tried adjusting the distributer to try to get it to fix maby a timing issue. that didn't fix it so i replaced the o ring seals on the injectors because they were toast and i cleaned the injector nozzles.how could i get this thing going?

I have Fuel Injected Porsches ... Older & newer than yours...
Both rely heavily on proper FUEL PRESSURE...

... and the factory manuals for both...
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

I always suggest covering the BASICS first...

Make sure you are getting fuel & fire.

The are simple pressure gauges & spark lights
to accomplish both...

Even if you can hear & feel the injectors clicking...
MEANS absolutely NOTHING without pressure.

Since the PCM uses info gatheres from the crank and cam sensors to calculate ignition - and there are no OBD codes - in all likelihood, the PCM itself is bad.

The Ignition Module, also transmits to the PCM.

It appears after all your testing - that the PCM is at fault.

It does not error report on itself (unfortunately).

The ignition timing is controlled by the Powertrain Control Module (PCM). No adjustment is necessary (distributorless ignition) or possible.

The engines covered by this manual are equipped with distributorless ignitions, ignition timing is controlled by the Powertrain Control Module (PCM), as applicable. No adjustments are possible. If ignition timing is not within specification, there is a fault in the engine control system. Diagnose and repair the problem as necessary.
Ignition timing is the measurement, in degrees of crankshaft rotation, of the point at which the spark plugs fire in each of the cylinders. It is measured in degrees before or after Top Dead Center (TDC) of the compression stroke.
Ideally, the air/fuel mixture in the cylinder will be ignited by the spark plug just as the piston passes TDC of the compression stroke. If this happens, the piston will be at the beginning of the power stroke just as the compressed and ignited air/fuel mixture forces the piston down and turns the crankshaft. Because it takes a fraction of a second for the spark plug to ignite the mixture in the cylinder, the spark plug must fire a little before the piston reaches TDC. Otherwise, the mixture will not be completely ignited as the piston passes TDC and the full power of the explosion will not be used by the engine.
The timing measurement is given in degrees of crankshaft rotation before the piston reaches TDC (BTDC). If the setting for the ignition timing is 10 BTDC, each spark plug must fire 10 degrees before each piston reaches TDC. This only holds true, however, when the engine is at idle speed. The combustion process must be complete by 23° ATDC to maintain proper engine performance, fuel mileage, and low emissions.
As the engine speed increases, the pistons go faster. The spark plugs have to ignite the fuel even sooner if it is to be completely ignited when the piston reaches TDC. Spark timing changes are accomplished electronically by the engine and ignition control computers.
If the ignition is set too far advanced (BTDC), the ignition and expansion of the fuel in the cylinder will occur too soon and tend to force the piston down while it is still traveling up. This causes pre ignition or -knocking and pinging-. If the ignition spark is set too far retarded, or after TDC (ATDC), the piston will have already started on its way down when the fuel is ignited. The piston will be forced down for only a portion of its travel, resulting in poor engine performance and lack of power.
Timing marks or scales can be found on the rim of the crankshaft pulley and the timing cover. The marks on the pulley correspond to the position of the piston in the No. 1 cylinder. A stroboscopic (dynamic) timing light is hooked onto the No. 1 cylinder spark plug wire (2.2L engine only, on the 2.4L engines, special adapters are needed) . Every time the spark plug fires, the timing light flashes. By aiming the light at the timing marks while the engine is running, the exact position of the piston within the cylinder can be easily read (the flash of light makes the mark on the pulley appear to be standing still). Proper timing is indicated when the mark and scale are in specified alignment.


WARNING When checking timing with the engine running, take care not to get the timing light wires tangled in the fan blades and/or drive belts.

84 porsche 944 replaced new spark plugs and wires,cap,rotor,coil,emc,DME relay,fuel pump, reference speed sensors, new battery, and still no start. Any suggestions is what to do next?


Not much left unchanged is there and no doubt you have done compression testing on all 4 cylinders as well. (If not you need to). I assume it is cranking over normally with the starter motor but not firing.

I would try one of the Porsche Owners Forums for this as one of the other 944 owners there should be able to help..... Like this one..................

How do you check if you have compression on a 84 porsche 944


You have to buy or borrow a compression gauge tester. It threads into the spark plug hole; so you pull all the plugs out, then check each cylinder's compression. The proper way is to first disable gas and spark, put the tester into the first cylinder, then crank the engine over a set number of times- the same amount of cranking for each cylinder, so all get a balanced test. While cranking, hold the accelerator pedal all the way to the floor-this lets the engine breathe normally, getting all the air available. then compare your compression readings: a good healthy engine will have all cylinders pretty even, in the range of somewhere between 150 psi-200 psi. Low compression readings means compression is being lost somewhere, like worn piston rings, bad head gasket seal, or valves not sealing.

Wondering if you have any compression at all? Hold your finger over a spark plug hole while someone briefly cranks the engine over. You can tell if there's any compression at all-you will feel the pressure build up under your finger. Rent or buy the gauge tester to get a true reading of your compression.

1999 Porsche 911 Careers, no compression in cylinder 4. 91,636 miles, 3.4L. Possible causes??


Likely either:

1) Valve issue (like a burnt valve(s))
2) Valve lifter issue

Other more outwardly obvious issue may be a head gasket?

I believe only a "Leakdown" test can determine which of these issues it may be, but that is a complicated, multi-step process. Next, I recall reading that If the compression test is done with the throttle plate closed, cylinder #4 may always be the lowest (which I think is normal). You likely would need a qualified mechanic to test and repair. Good Luck!

Hi Nick. you need a 12 volt battery of this size:
  • Length: 11.5625 in
  • Width: 6.875 in
  • Height: 6.875 in
  • to fit into your space. bring the old one to your parts store if possible. clean the terminals with wire wool or scotch bright and apply Vaseline petroleum jelly to them after fitting. Cover the top with a plastic sheet or something, corrugated plastic is good, if it does not already have a cover. For your fuel pump any model 924 pump that has the same pipe connection will work, the wiring is simple and the same on them all. You also need to check your fuel pump relay and check that the fuel pump has 12volts supply and a good earth
