Sounds about right for the miles. A Bosch Oxygen Sensor will cost you around $61 - A DENSO is about $10 cheaper(NAPA prices). Easy to replace, and If you do not replace you will eat up allot of fuel and also could take out your catalytic converter too.. Good idea to replace it. A shop typically charges around $65 labor plus parts to replace it.

Take Care

Thank you! Is the sensor easily accessed so maybe my husband could replace it?

You bet. It unscrews from the exhaust pipe, so he will want to do it when its cooled off. There are several Oxygen Sensors on your car, so make sure that you have the actual Code number, so he knows which one to replace. It should be on that sheet. It will refer to it as Right or Left, Front of Converter, Rear of Converter. ..

2004 hyundai elantra sedan check engine light on, 1st try at autozone gave P2251 followed by P0420, I reset the car computer to check if it comes back and it did after nearly 100 miles. second try at...

The codes that i have pulled out relates to Oxygen sensor and Catalyst converter faults.
P0420: Catalytic converter system,Bank 1,efficiency
below threshold.
P2251: Heated Oxygen Sensor (H02S)1, Bank 1, negative current control open circuit.
But not necessary the faults. You need to run the scope to see wht patterns u get on the oxygen sensor, and on the obd scanner you may be able to pick up oxygen sensor coming on and going off or rich or lean mixture and the mvolts of the sensor. Also check if the wires are not broken on the sensor. Sometimes a clogged O2 sensor can cause these problems.

- Heated Oxygen Sensor (H2OS) Bank 1 Sensor 2 circuit fuse
- Faulty Engine Control Module (ECM) When is the code detected? The P0037 is set when the ECM detects an excessively low voltage through the heated oxygen sensor heater circuit P0037 LEXUS Description Oxygen Sensors (O2S) or Heated Oxygen Sensors (HO2S) need to reach a minimum operating temperature of 750 degrees F to produce an accurate voltage signal. The faster the heated oxygen sensor reaches that temperature the faster the sensor will start sending an accurate signal to the Engine Control Module (ECM).

In order to achieve the require temperature, a heater element is included inside the heated oxygen sensor. The ECM controls the heated oxygen sensor heater element based on signals from the engine coolant temperature and engine load. The ECMcontrols the heater element circuit by allowing current flow to ground.

The ECM monitors the voltage signal received through the heater element circuit and determines the state of the circuit by comparing the voltage detected with the factory specifications.

My MIL light came on for my VW 2004 Passat and I had the code read at Autozone. The code was "system 2 lean; bank one" what does that mean?

It indicated the oxygen sensor at the bank one is reading wrongly or detecting the fault. It must be because the oxygen sensor itself has failed.

My 2004 ford taurus is 98 000 miles and the engine light is on the dashboard just now what i should do ?

You will need to put your car on a diagnostic fault code reader. The engine malfunction light will come on if there is a fault with the emissions if it runs ok and isn't misfiring it's probably a oxygen sensor fault or a catalyst fault. The light won't go out unless the fault is cleared

Have you had the engine codes pulled. Usually when you replace an O2 sensor you would have to replace the converters

check your gas cap. If you fill your gas while the vehicle is running, it will also cause your light to come on. Go to OReilys or Autozone and they will shut it off for free and tell you the problem

If you take it to a auto parts store they can help you get the code out of your cars computer. This will not cost you anything and may help identify the probelm. I use Autozone and Carquest for my parts stores.

MY 2001 INFINITI QX4 KEEPS SAYING SERVICE SOON.WHAT ARE THE POSSIBLE CAUSES

First off, make sure that the gas cap is tightened beyond three clicks. If it is and has been then there are many things that could be causing the light to come on. But let me start by assuring you that it is not something that requires immediate attention. The sole purpose of the service engine light is to detect malfunctions of emissions related components. If the gas cap isn't tight, the computer system detects an incorrect amount of pressure inside the tank due to vapor leaking out of the filler neck. If the cap is tightened after a period of time the computer detects the right pressure and the light will go off. However, on QX4's the most common cause of the light is oxygen sensors, or cam and crank position sensors, and finally intake valve timing control sensors or solenoids. O2 sensors measure the amount of oxygen in the exhaust gas. Normally I have seen that in damp and wet conditions these sensors are more likely to intermittenly give false readings. That being said, although the SES light is not an emergency situation, it will need to be addressed at some point, as the Engine control module takes the readings from these various sensors and automatically adjusts things like idle control, and air fuel mixture ratio, and eventually will to some point affect the performance of the vehicle. I have seen folks drive 100K miles with a service engine light on, so if you don't want to spend a 200 or so dollars right away, I would take the car to autozone, have the codes retrieved, and report back to this forum, at that point I would be able to advise you a little further. But more than likely you could continue driving the car without any driveablility issues.

Check engine light - P0420 code

Causes A code P0420 may mean that one or more of the following has happened:
  • Leaded fuel was used where unleaded was called for
  • An oxygen sensor is not reading (functioning) properly
  • The engine coolant temperature sensor is not working properly
  • Damaged or leaking exhaust manifold / catalytic converter / exhaust pipe
  • Retarded spark timing
  • The oxygen sensors in front and behind the converter are reporting too similar of readings
