Open Question

Hi, My 2006 GM Sierra noted a message on the display "Service 4x4". Sevice department performs fault code check and finds coads c0327 encoder circuit malfunction and c0321 transfer cas lock circuit malfunction stored in computer. They also usig the data monitor checked for power and ground at components, and checked for component operation. They confirmed failure to switch and installed a new one. The message is still on my display to service 4x4. Do you thin a reflash is the fix because they are telling me to take the treck to the dealer to number 12584315.

SOURCE: the onboard dash computer of

Hello,
This is a common issues with this truck. You have probably tightened the gas cap a bunch of times and are like what the heck. The gas cap DIC warning is part of the evaporative system to reclaim gas vapors. The onboard computer on the truck monitors the gas tank vapor pressure, which checks for vapor leaks in the fuel system. This warning involves a pressure mismatch, which the onboard computer relates to a fuel vapor leak. It assumes fuel vapors are escaping via your gas cap thus circumventing the purpose of the evaporative system. A common fix is to dip your finger in a bit of motor oil and put it onto the gas cap gasket to seal it (like you do an oil filter.) This should solve your problem. If the gasket is ripped or torn then buy a new gasket or a new gas cap. The reason for the oil is to lubricated the gasket again as they get very dry over time, given their location.
Regards, Tony

DTC C0327 Encoder Circuit Malfunction - you have a electrical circuit problem ! I suggest you take this to a ASE certified repair facility . There is a very long diagnostic process to test this !
Circuit Description
The transfer case encoder is a switch that converts a shaft position, representing a mode or range position, into electrical signals for use by the transfer case shift control module. The encoder houses 4 Hall effect sensors that are used for channels P, A, B, and C. These sensors provide a path to ground, when a magnet, (part of the Motor Encoder), passes over them.
The transfer case shift control module supplies an 8 V reference and a ground circuit for the encoder hall effect sensors to function.
The transfer case shift control module supplies current limited 5 V on all the channels, thus as these channels are pulled to ground, the module can interpret the location of the transfer case shift position.
This DTC detects an open, short to ground, or a short to voltage (12 V) in the Encoder Feed Circuit, an open in the Signal Ground Circuit, an open, short to ground, or short to voltage (12 V) in the Encoder channel circuits.

Yes we can ! With the light on and or flashing , DTC'S - diagnostic trouble codes are stored in the 4X4 control module . Have the codes check , not at auto zone or any other parts stores . There code reader tool will not pull this codes . Need to take to a qualified repair shop . Testing also needs to done , not guessing an throwing parts at it . This 4X4 system can set a number of codes .

Need to find where the speed sensor control unit is on my 2005 cheve 1500 4x4. my service 4x4 readout stays on , and was told it might be this unit

Hello, if the servicewd message is coming on, doupt it is the speed sensor, there are sereval things that can cause this message, a 4wd switch problem, a control module problem, a encoder motr problem, or even a wire problem. you will need to have the 4wd control module scanned for trouble codes, to have some idea what is going on. the most common fault with this truck is a code C0327, which is usually a bad encoer motor. also there are sevral software updates for the control module. these software uodates are normally done at the dealer with some special progarmming tools

Message board in dash comes up saying "service

Welcome, it is telling you there is a problem go to shop and have the codes read. Even though 4 wheel still works.
there are two common problems w/auto 4x4, one is like described "switch" problems, replace /repair......the other involves a sensor internal to the encoder motor, which is fairly inexpensive, and not very difficult to replace. there should be a code stored in your pcm to assist in diagnosis, if there is a C0327, than I would replace the sensor in the encoder motor.

The service 4x4 light is on and it will not shift inyo 4x4.it has push button 4wd.has power to the push buttons but will not go into 4wd.

Hello, there are many things that can cause this, the most common problem is the encoder sensor inside the encoder motor on the side of transfer case. this is what actaully shifts the transfer case in 4wd. there are several software updates for the 4wd system on this truck also. this requires a gm scan tool and aprogramming station to install the software updates. you will need to start by having the 4wd system scanned for trouble codes. once a code has been pulled from the syste, then we would have a much better idea what the fault is. I suspect that there is a code C0327 stored in the system

I have a service 4x4 dash light. What does this

Hello, this warning light is for a malfunction in the transfer case control module. this vehicle has a NP8 transfer case system. what you will have to do is to have the transfer case control module scanned for trouble codes. the control module stores trouble codes to help is finding the problem. in most cases on this vehicle, you will either have a code C0327 or a b2725 code stored. code C0327 is for a failed encoder motor or sensor. code B2725 is for a bad control switch

Why does a 1999 Suburban Auto Transfer case not engage and not go into 4X4 or auto 4X4 and push button lights on dash do not light when the fuse is good?

The 4x4 switch on the dash likes to take a dump in those years. They also like to eat encoder motors. If you have a way of checking it, try and get the codes out of the transfer case modual. b2725 means you need a new 4x4 switch on the dash. c0327 means you need a new encoder motor. There are a bunch of other codes that can be in there. But I'll take a guess and say those will be the ones you'll see.

Oh and for what it's worth the encoder motor is the the thing on the transfer case that shifts it. It's a electric motor. And it's NOT cheap! So make sure you find out if it's really bad before you put one in.

How may buttons for the 4X4 two , three , or four ? Do the lights flash ? Any messages - service four wheel drive system ? Which transfer case does it have ?

Transfer Case - NVG 246-NP8 (Two Speed Automatic)
The transfer case shift control module uses the VIN information for calculations that are required for the different calibrations used based on axle ratio, transmission, tire size, and engine. The system does not know which calibration to use without this information.
Transfer Case Encoder Motor
The transfer case encoder motor consists of a permanent magnet (PM) DC motor and gear reduction assembly. It is located on the left hand side (drivers side) of the transfer case. When activated it turns the sector shaft of the transfer case (clockwise or counter clockwise) to shift the transfer case. The encoder motor is controlled with a pulse width modulated (PWM) circuit within the transfer case shift control module. This circuit consists of a driver on both the Motor Feed A and Motor Feed B circuits. The encoder motor is bi-directional to allow the motor to shift the transfer case from 2HI or 4HI to NEUTRAL and 4LO positions.
Transfer Case Encoder
The encoder is mounted to the transfer case encoder motor assembly and is replaced as an assembly. The encoder converts the sector shaft position (representing a mode or range) into electrical signals inputs to the transfer case shift control module. The module can detect what position the transfer case is in by monitoring the 4 encoder channels (P, A, B, and C). These inputs translates into AUTO 4WD, 2H, 4H, NEUTRAL, and 4L or in transition between gears.
Transfer Case Motor Lock
The transfer case motor lock is used to provide a 2H, 4H, and 4L lock-up feature. When the lock circuit is energized, the transfer case encoder motor is allowed to turn. When the transfer case is placed 2H, 4H, or 4L the motor lock circuit has no power provided to it and the lock is applied. This assures that the transfer case remains in the current gear position. When AUTO 4WD is selected the motor lock remains applied until an adaptive mode (torque is applied to the front propshaft) is required. During an adaptive mode the motor lock circuit is energized and the motor lock is released, enabling the encoder motor to turn and apply torque to the front propshaft.

SERVICE indicator (4WD/AWD) Lamp
The SERVICE indicator (4WD/AWD) lamp is an integral part of the cluster and cannot be serviced separately. This lamp is used to inform the driver of the vehicle of malfunctions within the automatic transfer case (ATC) system. The SERVICE indicator (4WD/AWD) lamp is controlled by the transfer case shift control module via a Class 2 message or by a Sevice Indicator Control Circuit.

The first thing to do before assuming it's a loose wire would be to have it checked for codes , auto zone , advance etc... can not check this codes .

Service 4wd

If you had the switch and encoder motor replaced 5 months ago, then you have warranty. You need to return to the dealer and have them pull codes to see if it is the C0327 again. Some of these trucks also had grounding issues for the 4wd module. If it is the same c0327 code stay on them and make them confirm their original diagnosis.
