Dear Oakham

Righteo, your first main issue here is that you need to make sure that your replacement wheel bearing is of the exact specifications to your vehicle and as the one that was originally fitted to the motor vehicle upon building.

Your other main issues here are likely to relate to matters regarding wheel balancing, tracking, alignment and toeing.. You may also have additional setbacks if you remove the entire driveshaft in order to get at the wheel bearing as you will require to replace lost gearbox oil.

Should you find that you have competently handled these situations, then it may be worthwhile considering to invest in a decent torque wrench, as the nuts, bolts and fixings MUST ONLY be tightened to their torque capabilities and no further.

You can always get hold of the workshop manual or consult a mechanic near you for another load of information.

I wish you all the best,

yours sincerely,
kind regards

Oz

There is a little difference between the front and rear. The days of packing wheel bearing is almost over. The front bearing you have to pull the hub and change to bearing. The rear wheel you have to change out the hub bearing and all. The front is a sealed bearing and not serviceable. Please rate my answer so I am rewarded points for it.

Why does my ford escort give a grinding noise from the front left wheel on braking, with or without the brakes applied?

Your brake squealers are rubbing, telling you it is time to change the pads before they wear down the rotors. If that isn't the sound you got then the bearing is shot and you have less time to fix it because it will weld itself to the spindle and you will have to replace more parts. Hope this helps.

The wheel bearing assy is pressed into the hub---you need to remove the front hub assy and take it to a parts store that has a machine shop----or you go to a salvage yard and buy a used hub and install it--way easier...
