Question about 2003 Hyundai Santa Fe

When i turn the key if feels as if the mechanism inside is broke. the key turns but it is not turning inside the steering column.

You can't There is a pin that engages to lock the steering column that is activated by the turn of the cylinder...You must remove the steering wheel ( a big task considering you have airbags) to disengage the locking mechanism and replace the cylinder...You are best to get a locksmith that deals with automobiles.. They have tools that can extract a broken key...It is far better than having the steering wheel and locking mechanism removed. (It is not cheap!()

Unable to turn the key in ignition...a little play in steering wheel, but key refuses to turn


Trying smacking the shifter hard to the park position which it is already. There is a lock that stops the ignition from unlocking if the gear selector not getting into the P position all the way.

What the problem sounds like is that one of these rods operates the actual ignition switch (I've seen this kind of ignition system on 1970's GM's). When the ignition key is turned the mechanism inside pushes one of these rods which in turn is physically connected to the ignition switch further down the steering column, have a look down there with a light you may be able to see it but it might be covered. Sounds like the rascals were trying to get to the one rod to push or pull on it in order to start the truck. I would put the key in the ignition lock turn it back and forth to see if one of the severed ends moves and notice which way it moves (one of the two going up towards the steering wheel) then put the key in run position (to unlock the steering wheel) Then push (or pull, depending) on the corresponding severed rod, this should start the vehicle. Remember there should be one click then you should feel a kind of spring action push or pull enough to engage the starter then when the truck starts let go of it. You may have to expose enough of the rod to be able to do this. To stop the engine push the rod the opposite way until you feel one click. You can also visit or call a bone yard to see if they have one of these trucks and get yourself the broken pieces or the whole steering column. I hope this helps you.

The turn signal switch or in Ford terms "multi-function" switch is easy to replace if you are mechanically inclined. Lower the steering column "tilt" adjustment for easier access. Remove the lower panel (below the steering column). Remove the three screws from the plastic column covers that surround the multi-function switch. Turn the key to the run position, then from the bottom side of the column, use a very small pocket screwdriver, allen wrench or similiar tool to push up on the ignition cylinder release pin. The hole is located just below the cylinder. With the pin pushed, pull out on the key and cylinder. Next seperate the two cover halves and you will see the complete multi-function switch. remove the two attaching screws, remove the electrical connectors and replace the switch. Replace all removed components and you're done! You can purchase the switch at most auto parts stores, ford dealers or ebay. the actuator inside the sterring column that the lock cylinder turns is boken, this is a very complex job and is not for the home tech without a factory service manual.

Not an exact solution, but perhaps information that might lead to one.

1.Replaced the tumblers? I believe I would replace the entire ignition switch this time. It's my belief that the body of the ignition switch is worn inside, and will keep damaging the tumblers.

2.Do you have a tilt steering wheel? It's best to keep the steering column in straight line when starting the car, then tilt the wheel to where you want, after the car is started. When the steering column is in a tilted position, it puts undue strain on the ignition key switch, and the mechanism the ignition key switch operates, on GM vehicles.

This mechanism, consists of a half moon gear on the ignition key switch, that turns inside a 'Planetary' gear. I used the term 'Planetary', as the gear shape is hard to describe. It resembles an oblong loop, shaped like the number 9, with gear teeth on the inside bottom of the loop. This 'Loop' rotates, when the gear teeth of the ignition key switch, engage the teeth on the loop, and pushes a rod, or retracts the rod. The rod goes down the side of your steering column, and turns on, or turns off an ignition switch, located at the bottom left side of the steering column.

Having the steering wheel tilted, puts a strain on the ignition key switch internals, the oblong loop can break, and/or gear teeth can be stripped off.

1997 T-Bird/Pulled out key but car was still on


I'm not a mechanic, but when this happened to my wife's car I took it apart to figure out what was going on. In the steering column there is a plastic rod that connects from the key ignition down the steering column to a mechanical electrical switch. The rod has broken inside the column, so when you turn the key clockwise or counterclockwise the mechanical switch at the end of the steering column does not get engaged, so the car will stay in the last state it was in. You can remove the mechanical switch at the bottom of the steering column by removing two screws "hex head" and it will hang loose. If you look at this it is a yellowish white box with all the wires connected into it. On the top of this box you will see a silver medal shaft about one inch in length. You can slide the shaft forward and backward and it will turn the car on and off just as if you were using the key. This is a temporary fix to get you going and I have yet been able to figure out how to replace the plastic rod. Chalk up another one for ********* engineers!!

I tried to turn my 1981 mercedez benz 300d on and smoke emitted from the steering wheel column. The key can be inserted into the ignition and the power light turns on, but when you turn the key the car...


This is a bad problem, and will probably require you to replace the entire ignition system and wiring located in the mechanical end of the steering column. I feel the smoke was melting wiring due to excessive use and time. the shorted wiring or even an open wire in the steering column will most certainly keep your engine from starting. If your not familiar with 12volt systems or have a hard time with small mechanics, than find someone who can help disassemble the column and locate the wiring that needs to be replaced.
