1 Answer

The car cranks over for a long time before starting. Starter motor works fine but the engine does not fire until 20 or more seconds of cranking.

This issue could be one of several things, is it setting an check engine light? I would go to Autozone and put a scan tool on to attempt to identify the issue.

Could be simple as a tune up, or it could be more complicated, that is why i would put a scan tool on--it is free.

Does it make a difference when you give it a bit of throttle when cranking?

Well, yes they could but it is not probable. You could put some injector cleaner in the tank. Could be a dirty fuel filter,,,, use techtron (sp?) injector cleaner-(GM uses this at there testing facilities)

Plugs could be just dirty too. Pull a plug and look at it it should be a light brown color to indicate it is running, or has been running right.

Is air cleaner plugged up? I have seen this too, Hope this helps.

You need good spark, good fuel, and proper TIMING to start efficiently.

If you used a shot of starting fluid would it start immediately?

Try one thing too, key up the ignition for a few seconds before cranking over, see if this makes a difference...

89 Silverado... Cranked it ran for about 20 seconds, went dead and hasn't started back. Just turns over and over. Im getting gas. But im not getting fire

Make sure battery has a full charge. Don't crank the starter motor more than a few seconds at a time, let it cool, a little. How long since a tune-up? Are there any applicable codes? Have you tried a jumper wire at your data link connector, to get codes? If your check engine lite isn't functional, it won't work.
Did you check primary voltage to ignition coil, usually a pink wire, goes hot with the key on. If possible, use a test light on negative side of coil, it should pulse with engine cranking. The ignition module pulses ground with input from pick-up coil. Could be other issues? If the battery isn't charged, we're just spinning our wheels.

Does the rotor turn when you crank it?

How do you bleed a diesel pump jeep Cherokee turbo diesel 3.1 5 cylinder 2001

we dont have this engine here, USA.
but i have the WG jeep book,
starting page 12 , chapter 14

FUEL INJECTION PUMP BLEEDING
(1) If the fuel injection pump has been replaced,
air should be bled at the overflow valve before
attempting to start engine.
(a) Loosen the overflow valve (Fig. 18) at the
rear of the injection pump.
(b) Place a towel below the valve.
WARNING: WHEN CRANKING THE ENGINE TO
BLEED AIR FROM THE INJECTION PUMP, THE
ENGINE MAY START. PLACE THE TRANSMISSION
IN NEUTRAL OR PARK AND SET PARKING BRAKE
BEFORE ENGAGING THE STARTER MOTOR.
CAUTION: Do not engage the starter motor for
more than 30 seconds at a time. Allow 2 minutes
between cranking intervals.
(2) Crank the engine for 30 seconds at a time to
allow air trapped in the injection pump to vent out
the fuel injector drain tubes. Continue this procedure
until the engine starts. Observe the previous WARNING
and CAUTION.
(3) Tighten overflow valve.
HIGH-PRESSURE FUEL LINE BLEEDING
WARNING: THE INJECTION PUMP SUPPLIES HIGH-
-PRESSURE FUEL OF APPROXIMATELY 45,000 KPA
(6,526 PSI) TO EACH INDIVIDUAL INJECTOR
THROUGH THE HIGH-PRESSURE LINES. FUEL
UNDER THIS AMOUNT OF PRESSURE CAN PENETRATE
THE SKIN AND CAUSE PERSONAL INJURY.
WEAR SAFETY GOGGLES AND ADEQUATE PROTECTIVE
CLOTHING AND AVOID CONTACT WITH
FUEL SPRAY WHEN BLEEDING HIGH-PRESSURE
FUEL LINES.
WARNING: DO NOT BLEED AIR FROM THE FUEL
SYSTEM OF A HOT ENGINE. DO NOT ALLOW FUEL
TO SPRAY ONTO THE EXHAUST MANIFOLD WHEN
BLEEDING AIR FROM THE FUEL SYSTEM.
Bleed air from one injector at time.
(1) Loosen the high-pressure fuel line fitting at
the injector (Fig. 19).
(2) Crank the engine until all air has been bled
from the line. Do not operate the starter motor
for longer than 30 seconds. Wait 2 minutes
between cranking intervals.
(3) Start the engine and bleed one injector at a
time until the engine runs smoothly.

4.9l V-8. Why won't it start?

You will have damaged some of the critical electronic components on the engine when you connected the power source up the wrong way.

Until you identify and replace all the damaged components you will not be able to start the engine. To begin with the starter motor solenoid and starter motor will most likely be damaged. You would need to check with a mechanic or auto electrician on all the items that will be damaged as a result of connecting power up incorrectly.

Which is the problem, no fire, or no crank. No fire means to spark to engine, but engine turns over fine. No crank means engine won't turn over when key is turned. I'm assuming engine will not turn over. Three most common problems. 1. Weak battery (get tested at auto parts store). Will hold charge for short time once started, but loses it when sits overnight. 2. Bad starter. Possible but not likely, still not out of the question. 3. Bad battery cables. This is an easy test. Take a pair of jumper cables and bypass the battery cables by connecting black side of jumper cable to "-" of battery and block of engine, and red of jumper cables to "+" of battery and (tap) Battery terminal post on starter...engine should turn over. Ensure you take all safety precautions to prevent car from moving during this procedure. Best of luck resolving this problem.

2000Saturn starts fine but want start for hours after first starting

Many cars nowadays have sensors built in to make then run economically and reduce pollution. If you start you car for very short runs, after a while these sensors become fouled, and/or they shut down to protect the engine.

Without diagnostics, I can't say exactly what the problem is but, I would suggest the next time you start the car, you give it a good run and get the engine good and hot to burn of any deposits stuck inside. (about 40 miles). Assuming this works, give you car a good run, 20 minutes, at least once a week.

Try unhooking one of the battery cables and leave it off for at least 20 minutes. When you hook it back up the computers should re-boot. That has solved problems for me with heater, interior lites, power windows, AC, day time running lites, power mirrors, fast idle, rough or slow shifting, CD player, and wipers on GM autos and S-10 PU and Dodge trucks. None of the switches are connected to the device they control anymore. The switch tells the computer to open the window and the computer send a signal to the window motor. When the computer gets confused strange things will happen or not happen. Of course you may have to re-set your radio stations.

Sounds like a bad battery connection, either on the battery, or the starter or engine ground, or just a poor battery.
