Question about 2003 Ford Taurus

1 Answer

My 2003 Taurus with 93,000 miles occasionally stalls, cuts out when I'm just driving between 35-45 mph. I kick the gas pedal to restart the motor, all happening in 2-3 seconds. Mechanic put a computer sensing device on the car which indicated problem with fuel pressure, but not sure exactly what. Any ideas?

Low fuel pressure can be caused by fuel pump or pressure regulator. The regulator is on the upper side of the engine and looks like picture below. Check the vacuum hose all the way to see if it has a loose or broken connection. The regulator is much easier to replace that the pump, so I always recommend one replace the regulator before the pump. If you know someone that can check the fuel pressure before the regulator, you can actually determine which part is bad.

Sorry, the above URL truncated. by the way, if your current regulator is adjustable, you may be able to fix the car with an adjustment.

When driving at about 30 mph occasionally the drive seems to slip and then catch. car is 2005 1.6 fsi with 80k on clock

the gearbox is a computer controlled auto with 4th lock up (O/D) and should, if driven very carefully, change from fluid drive to mechanical drive at about 30 mph.to check transmision carry out the following.
from standstill,put car in drive,no gas,and let the car reach max speed(about 30 ish)then.
from standstill using 1/3 gas pedal (do not move gas foot)let the car accelerate to max speed.
lastly, put car in drive and floor gas pedal(make sure you are alone)then
drive as economically as you can, the gearshift patern will then adjust to your driving style(takes about 50 miles)You will feel the car go from fluid to mechanical drive as a kind of slight drop in revs then ...engage.
assuming you have checked fluid level first of course....

Intermittent vibration coming from engine while a/c running

Change plug wires. Most often, plug wires will only short out when they are under load, so you don't notice anything until your motor is doing a little extra work.

2003 Taurus stalls at traffic lights

Here is the most common cause of surges and stalls, it is the idle speed control air-bypass valve and throttle valve, they get full of gunk over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls) like yours, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake.
