I started my 1992 Mercedes 300E 4 matic and it ran for about 5 minutes then shut off . Trying to restart and it won't and it acts like the timing is off. It is getting fuel and the fuel pump can be heard when turning the key. How do I check to se if the timing is right and maybe the timing chain has slipped?

There must be spark because it started and ran for 5 minutes before quitting. What would cause it to just stop?

I forgot to answer that it is a gas engine. Does this car have a distributor or is it electronic ignition?

I have a1992 Mercedes 300E 4matic. I started it and it ran about 5 minutes then shut off and would not restart. I can hear the fuel pump running and I took the air cleaner off and put gas into the carburetor and it still would not stark and it seemed like the timing was off. How can do i check the timing for this engine? I havent checked to see if there is spark since the car is at another location but still when I go to work on it I would like to know hwo to check the timing and am wondering if it has a computerized ignition system of a distributor and how to check the timing to see if maybe the timing chain has slipped.

The ignition timing for your 1992 Mercedes Benz 300E is set between 7-11 Degrees (for the 2.6L engine) and 6-11 degrees (for the 3.0L engine) Both are non-adjustable. The first thiing to look at is your spark plug wires and spark plugs. Next, replace the Oxygen sensor. Click on the link below to view and confirm the timing information:

Is it a diesel car? If not then please check the spark on the spark plugs. May be there is no spark.

1992 mercedes 300e cranks over starts for a second then die

Could be a number of things. Start with the fuel pump relay. When your key is in the start/crank pos. it overides the relay as soon as you release the key to run possition the relay has to stay ingaged or the fuel pump will shut off. Also look in your owners manuel for impact or emergency fuel shut off switch reset.

I have a 1992 E300 gas mercedes 4 door sedan. Always started and ran great until recently. Just had motor mounts and fan belt mechanism replaced. Car starts ok initially but after 5 minutes if i stop the...

Check spark plugs and eventually replace air filter.
Is it an injection or carburetor model?
If it injections it is probably a dirty injector or a computer problem.
If it is carb you need just to regulate carburetor.

1988 Mercedes Benz 300E 3.0L Gasoline F.I. ''Sputtering at Idle must have more than one car???? you don't drive the 300 atall im guessing. #1 start car drive up the road and \back to your house. #2 let it idle till problem starts. #3 once it does start with the problem keep it alive with the gas pedal. #4 once your have it safely from dying in higher rpms "rev it" like a kid would, you know like if you were gonna race some one lol. be careful not to over rev or damage engine. you should do this for five minutes no longer than that. #5 let it idle for another 5 minutes. #6 repeat every day until problem with idling decipates. it took mine 3 300e like 3 days of this. if your not going to drive the car once you get the problem out of the way. turn the car on everyday and let it idle for 5 minutes atleast and take it for a short drive once a week. they get lonelly you know lol. later on you can just turn the car on every 2 -3 days and let it idle but still take it on a short drive atleast once a week

There is an in tank fuel screen where the fuel feed line screws into the bottom of the fuel tank. The is also a convertional fuel filter which is located just in front of the rear wheel on left or right side depending on model. I have a wagon and mine is on the right side. There is a plastic panel that you need to remove with a 10mm socket and a long extention. There are three screws to remove before you can get to the fuel pump/fuel filter area.

I believe you need to see your dealer or authorized mechanic. Inertia/Safety switch is not user resettable like other makes.

Engine rough in low idle

I would start by replacing your automatic air intake and throtle body sensor. Check these 2 things out and let me know.

1999 CLK320 occasionally just shuts down for about 10 minutes

I had the same problem with the same car year and make.. it ended up being a "rev sensor" something like that or an "idle" sensor".
