93 TOYOTA HILUX ( 22RE ) STARTS THEN STALLS AFTER 1-2 MINUTES

I've installed a new fuel pump, fuel line assembly comming out of the tank, and a new fuel filter . Problem continued so i put a new pickup in the distributor no change . I checked the mass air flow meter and it seemed to give readings that did not correspond with the amount that the meter was open . A new mass air flow meter costs $900.00 so I went with a used one . No change with the problem , truck starts then stalls 1-2 minutes later . I tried 2 more used units ( mass air flow ) with the same results . I then replaced the coil and igniter and that did'nt help . I can prop open the air flow meter and the truck will run much longer , but poorly . My next guess would be the throttle position sensor , but I cant keep throwing money at a problem I can't find . Any advice would be appreciated .
Thanks
Bill

Check yer vaccuum lines for cracks and your head gasket for damage

You may have a vacuum leak, get a can of spray gumout, spray the vac lines and maniflod area, when the idle changes, youve found the leak! You want the engine running and spray on the outside but do direct the stream onto the hoses, if it is a vacuum leak, the engine idle will change speed, then you have detected a leak, repair the vacuum leak and see how it runs!
Check the idle air control, it's on the side of the throttlebdy...

Try cleaning the throttle body.Check the air-gap for the pick-up coil inside the distributor assembly(use a brass feeler gauge)
Check valve clearances if needed(possible tight intake valve adj.)
Check base timing(follow instr. via under hood label)
Hope this helps.

Where is the fuel pump located ? Is it in the tank?

The fuel pump assembly is located in the fuel tank. Refer to the fuel tank assembly illustrations in this section. On most applications, the fuel tank must be lowered to remove the fuel pump assembly. The fuel pump assembly is cooled by the fuel in the tank.
REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

See Figure 1
  1. Before disconnecting the fuel lines or any of the fuel system components, release the fuel system pressure as described previously in this section. Releasing system pressure is a very important step for the correct removal of the electric fuel pump.
    1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Unfasten the fuel pump assembly electrical connector and remove the fuel tank inspection cover.

If the truck has no fuel tank inspection cover, the fuel tank must be lowered or removed to gain access to the in-tank fuel pump.
    1. Disconnect the fuel outlet and return hoses. Remove the fuel tank assembly, if necessary.
    2. Remove the ring retaining bolts and the O-ring, then lift the fuel pump assembly from the fuel tank. Plug the opening with a clean rag to prevent dirt from entering the system.

When removing or installing the fuel pump assembly, be careful not to damage or deform it. Always install a new O-ring.
    To install:
    1. Install the fuel pump assembly in the fuel tank with a new O-ring. Install the ring retaining bolts. Install the fuel tank if removed.
    2. Reconnect the fuel lines and fasten the electrical connection.
    3. Connect the battery cable, then start the engine and check for fuel leaks.

The "Check Engine Light'' may stay on after installation is completed. If so, the trouble code in the control unit's memory must be erased. To erase the code, disconnect the battery cable for 10 seconds, then reconnect it a verify that the light is extinguished.

TESTING

See Figures 2 and 3
  1. Relieve the fuel system pressure, as described previously in this section.
  2. Disconnect the fuel inlet hose at the electro injection unit.

0900c1528018d242.jpg enlarge_icon.gifenlarge_tooltip.gif Fig. Fig. 3: Testing fuel system pressure using a gauge and a "T'' fitting
  1. Install a fuel pressure gauge.
  2. Start the engine and check the fuel line for leakage.
  3. Read the pressure on the pressure gauge. The gauge should read approximately 36.3 psi (250 kPa).
  4. Relieve the fuel system pressure again.
  5. Remove the pressure gauge from the fuel line and reconnect the fuel inlet hose.

Removal & Installation

Exploded view of the fuel sender, including the fuel pump

  1. Properly relieve the fuel system pressure

  1. If not already done, disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Raise and safely support the vehicle with jackstands.
  3. Safely drain and remove the fuel tank assembly as outlined later in this section.
  4. Detach the quick-connects from the fuel sender assembly and remove the fuel lines.
  5. Using tool J 35731, or an equivalent spanner wrench, remove the fuel sender lockring.
  6. Lift the sender assembly carefully out of the fuel tank.
  7. Remove the sender O-ring from the top of the sender and discard.

WARNING Do NOT run the fuel pump unless it is submerged in fuel. Running the pump dry will cause serious damage to the fuel pump and may cause the pump to explode due to the oxygen in the air.

  1. Note the position of the fuel pump strainer on the fuel pump and, while supporting the pump assembly in one hand, twist the strainer off the pump and discard the strainer.
  2. Detach the fuel pump electrical connector.
  3. Remove the clamp from the fuel line at the top of the pump.
  4. Hold the fuel sender upside down on a work bench and pull the fuel pump out of the lower mounting bracket. Once the pump is clear of the lower mounting bracket, tilt the pump outward and disconnect the pump from the sender assembly.
To install:
  1. Replace any attaching hoses or rubber sound insulators that show signs of deterioration.
  2. Install the rubber bumper and insulator on the fuel pump.
  3. Hold the fuel sender upside down and install the fuel pump between the fuel pulse dampener and mounting bracket.
  4. Attach the fuel pump electrical connector.
  5. Install the retaining clamp on the fuel line.
  6. Install a new fuel pump strainer on the outer edge of the ferrule until fully seated. The strainer must be facing the same direction as it was before removal.
  7. Position a new O-ring on the top of the fuel tank and install the sender assembly.
  8. Install the lockring using J-35731, or an equivalent spanner wrench.
  9. Install the fuel tank as outlined later in this section.
  10. Refill the gas tank.
  11. Connect the negative battery cable.
  12. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position to pressurize the fuel system and check for leaks.
