Question about 1991 Mazda 626

Open Question

1991 mazda 626 dx (non-turbo) 2.2 liter. Bough a remanufactured air mass sensor, NEW pcv valve, NEW fuel filter, and NEW cold air intake filter. When the engine starts at cold, the check engine light comes ON, it runs fine for 15 minutes, and when the engine warms up the check engine light goes OFF. Now when this happens, i can't floor the accelorator with out the engine sounding like its about to bottom out, and then i'll get the response. And when i come to a stop the engine idle is between 1400-1700 rpm's. there is a couple tears in the intake hose but i have more duct tape on it than Carver has liver pills. i can't find a OBD-I scantron anywhere and apparently they don't sell them without having to buy all 11 sensor adapters for some 200 bucks. I'm about to the point where i'm gonna replace all my gaskets or engine.

Have you replaced your PCV hose? If it gets sucked in it will cause a lot of problems.

SOURCE: MX-3 with V6 Manual transmission. Engine idle revving up and down

You should check your engine's AIR hoses that are connecting to the airbox. sometimes a simple airleak will be enough to alter your idle. Specially when its cold the car will already idle rough ( I know im canadian lol). So go check your air hoses ;)

1983 nissan 280 zx car back fires when cold

Sounds like you could have an aux air regulator valve, that is not working when it will not work; there is no fast idle cold. Should be around 1500 rpm cold, the car will stall out and pop through the intake when bad. You have a digital volt meter to do some testing with to make sure the mass air flow is working correctly.

Also, c
heck the plugs for how they're burning, check the air filter for good flow, do a compression test and judge from there. Intake backfire is usually caused by running lean or improper timing.

For the 79 model zx, ignition timing was 10 degrees BTDC @ 700rpm
For 80 and up zx, non turbo - 8 degrees BTDC +- 2 degrees @ 700rpm
turbo - 20 degrees BTDC +- 3 degrees @ 700 rpm

Also done with distributor vacuum advance hose removed and plugged.
NOTE:
* BTDC = Before Top Dead Center
* + - = Plus or minus
Hope thos helps; keep us updated.

Heard loud backfire and found box ( part F 202 90 001 and 002)attached to air intake hose shattered . what is plastic box called and where is best place to get another. After it broke I could start car...

No problem driving it, but expect it to idle weird. That box is not really a neccesity, only to regulate the air coming into the intake. Now your not gonna be able to get that box at an auto parts store. Your best bet is to find a auto salvage yard, find a mazda: 626 dx,lx; MX-6 non-turbo or Ford Probe non-turbo model (year is 88-92). Just as long as it has that Ford 2.2 liter inline 4, your fine. Bring a 3/8's wrench with a 6 inch extension and a 10 mm socket, possibly a 1/2 and 12 mm, i can't remeber exactly. Also bring a phillips screwdriver and a pair of needle nose pliers. Remove the intake box and air mass meter and place them off to the side, DO NOT REMOVE THE AIR MASS METER ELECTRICAL CONNECTION. remove the mounting bolts off the box, carefully pull the intake hose and box out of the engine bay. and repeat the steps in reverse to install into your car. If you pull the part your self you'll probably pay less than 30 dollars (us). if you have them pull it, expect to pay more.

91 mazda 626 erractic idle surge when engine is cold

My '91 626 did the same thing. I tested the throttle position sensor, and it was good so that wasn't it. The other likely culprit is the Idle Speed Control valve, or Idle Air Control valve, which is a $500 part new (more than I paid for the whole car). I pulled one off a 626 at the salvage yard and got it for 3 bucks, put it on (it's an easy DIY, just 4 philips screws holding it to the intake manifold), however I can't be sure that solved the problem, since I haven't run the car much since then. It would seem the most likely cause, tho, and a cheap fix if you go used. Other possibilities: O2 sensor or Mass Air Flow sensor?

i had the same code, p2187. check to the left of the throttle body(side facing the front of the veh.
there are 2 vaccum hoses going into the intake. the larger one on top has a spring clip holding it and if you look under that you'll see a smaller one with a check valve. mine was disconnected. plugs in under the larger one.
