It appears that you have a minor leak at where a hose attaches to an engine or radiator pipe. When the engine is hot any leak will evaporate quickly and therefore not be seen. As the coolant heats up it will expand into the overflow tank but once the engine is stopped the extra heat build up will force the coolant out the leaking joint. As the engine cools, the leak prevents the coolant from being sucked back from the overflow tank.

The heater hoses and those pesky little bypass hoses in the cooling system tend to go hard and split if they are over 10 years old. Check all hoses and clamps for a good tight fit and replace any hoses that have gone hard or have become soft and stretched. Those spring type hose clamps tend to be less effective in clamping as the hoses age. Worm drive ones are the best to use.

If unsure take vehicle to a cooling system specialist and have them do a pressure test and more thorough diagnosis.

If problem persists, then it could indicate a problem with the head gasket (Usually caused by allowing engine to become excessively overheated when cooling system has run dry) allowing very hot high pressure combustion gases into the engine water jacket, which super heats the coolant in the engine block, which then boils off, and is released via the cap or any leaks. If the head gasket is really bad it will leak water into the cylinders and into the oil in the sump. This is indicated by an emulsion of water and oil mix on the dipstick. You will also see white smoke (water vapour) from the exhaust.

Cannot locate cold fill line on impala 2008 coolant overflow tank

Just fill it up 1/4 full with coolent. Coolent expands when hot, which will fill the tank up more, so don't over fill too much. If you think your low on coolent, let the engine cool down, and open the radiator cap and fill it full from there. Filling the tank, will not add ANY coolent to the radiator untill it warms up (expands) and cools down (contracts pulling in coolent from the tank only at this moment.)

Coolant not visable

do not ever run the vehicle and check the coolant, coolant will go everywhere. leave the vehicle off and make sure its cold and then open radiator cap if radiator and overflow are empty then fill the radiator full and fill overflow to the fill line. put the cap back on then start vehicle. if no leakes then you where just low on coolant.

Coolant resevoir of 2002 Suburban is empty. What do I fill it with. Does this indicate a leak in the system?

The resevoir should be filled with a 50/50 solution of water and anti freeze.
The fact that it is empty indicates a leak in the system.
Refill it and watch the overflow tank and other coolent items like hoses and such and note any leakage.
If you smell the sweet smell of antifreeze when driving the truck , you may have a radiator issue.

Heat is not working - coolant was low so filled it.... problem here... heard something about an air pocket

If you dont have an external coolant leak anywhere under your hood that has shown up on your driveway it could be the intake manifold or the headgasket leaking. Also check the thermostate to solve the heat issue.

My radiator was not leaking until I filled up the resevoire. What could be wrong

possible your radiator tank has a leak in it up high and when you filled it, it simply raised the level to were the leak is at.filling your radiator or overflow absolutly will not damage your already had a leak, that is why you had to refill it.

Thermostat/radiator warning light comes on every 3 days - I add fluid to the overflow tank but it is empty after 2-3 days. what's the deal?

Your water pump is leaking, have it repaired immediately or it will seize up, snap your timing belt, and ruin the engine.

Coolent lose

Check youre waterpump...also spending 5 dollars on "Radiator STOP Leak" is a good investment. its an additive you add to youre radiator. If the actual radiator has a small crack or leak, this will fix it. Check every inch of both the upper and lower radiator hoses and connections.

Coolent leak... 96 dodge caravan

if you get an overflow through the resevior it's often times because the thermostat with stick shut causeing excess pressure. seeing is the car is not overheating this means that the trhermostat is opening but when you get that overflow it's sticking i would replace the thermostat as soon as possible to resolve this issue
